MATCH RESULT:

Adelaide United have put in an uncharacteristically poor performance, surrendering all three points and a 14 game unbeaten run at home, by going down 1-0 to Brisbane Roar.

United never quite found their feet tonight with the absence of Carrusca in mid-field definitely noticed.

The Roar on the other hand put in a spirited performance with Henrique picking up an injury and the winning goal with a stunning strike, both in the first half.

The win gave new Brisbane Roar coach just his second taste of success and sent departing captain Matt Smith out of the A-league a winner.

Smith came on off the bench in the 89th minute and leaves the A-league after three premierships. The away win moves Brisbane up to sixth while it leaves United in third and further away from the top two.

The game may again act as catalyst for both teams with Brisbane eager to push on from here and Adelaide now beatable at home and struggling to finish.

Quite the boil-over in the end here with a Henrique stunner and a subdued performance from the Reds giving the Brisbane Roar a 1-0 away win against Adelaide United.

MATCH PREVIEW:

It’s a very different outlook for both sides from their first-round encounter as Adelaide United welcome Brisbane Roar to Coopers Stadium. Join The Roar from 7.40pm (AEDT) to follow all the action.

After claiming last season’s premiership, the Brisbane Roar have gone downhill since their opening-round 2-1 shock loss to a resolute Adelaide United.

In contrast, the contest has spring-boarded the Reds to a successful and consistent opening part of the season, sitting comfortably at third compared to the Roar who are stuck outside finals contention at seventh.

This rematch may well prove crucial as Adelaide look to push onwards up the ladder and Brisbane seek to make amends and kickstart their premiership defence.

For Adelaide, all guns are blazing and United will be champing at the bit to rip into Brisbane Roar after their demolition of the Wanderers. Although statistically dominant, the Reds only managed two goals from at least 30 attempts which will undoubtedly fuel some more clinical finishing this time around.

The Adelaide squad is strong, and Josep Gombau is surrounded by in-form players all demanding selection. With a naturally attacking mindset, Gombau has favoured those who can push forwards.

Conversely for Brisbane, things aren’t very pretty. After scrapping to a mid-week, penalty-assisted, 1-0 win over the Wanderers, Roar were themselves beaten by a single penalty against Melbourne City on the weekend. With chances aplenty, Roar just couldn’t find the back the of the net.

After parting ways with their coach Mike Mulvey just two weeks ago, the Roar face another departure, with captain Matt Smith set to play his final game for the Roar having been given permission to leave and play in Thailand.

Based on form and off-field circumstances, the outcome of this game seems to be a no-brainer. Adelaide United at home are hard to beat on any occasion, but throw in a side with a departing captain, new coach, and an inability to finish, and a Reds win seems to be inevitable.

Having said this, nothing in football is every so predictable. Missing their fair share of opportunities last week, perhaps United will struggle to find the back of the net against a Roar side buoyed by their own turbulence?
