Two boats damaged in Sydney to Hobart

Damage has struck Sydney to Hobart yacht race competitor Wedgetail for a second successive year, forcing the Queensland boat to withdraw.

The 55-footer suffered mast damage at about 7.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday as she passed by an area near Freycinet National park on Tasmania’s mid-east coast.

“Hard running conditions” are to blame for the damage, race organisers reported.

In 2013 Wedgetail lost its mast in strong gales and had to retire.

In about the same place the boat suffered its fate on Sunday, New Zealand entry Giacomo lost its mast in strong northerly winds two hours earlier.

The 70-foot boat was in ninth place for line honours when damaged.

Crew aboard both boats are safe and well and the craft will motor to shelter.

Eleven boats have retired from the race, with 104 still to finish.

Veteran supermaxi Wild Oats XI earlier took a record eighth line honours in the race, surviving a late surge by race debutant Comanche.
