Scoreline: Rabbitohs 34-26 Roosters

Well done to South Sydney. They were in trouble in this contest after racing out to a 12 nil lead. The Roosters though scored four straight tries and led 22-12 early in the second half. With George Burgess leading the way though, the bunnies eventually steadied the ship and went on to secure an eight point victory. They are the team to beat no question. Roosters just failed defensively at key moments and Kenny-Dowall’s bombed try very costly as well. Great contest between great rivals.

Match Preview

A classic NRL rivalry resumes today as premiership favourites the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters do battle at ANZ Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:00pm (AEDT).

The Rabbitohs return to Homebush for the first time since defeating the Bulldogs in last year’s grand final, and standing opposite them is the very team they could face in the 2015 decider.

South Sydney played exceptionally well against the Broncos but they will need to improve even further if they are to defeat great rivals the Roosters.

Sydney are coming off a commanding 28-4 victory over premiership fancies the Cowboys in Townsville. The Roosters produced a professional 80-minute performance that saw them defend superbly and attack with precision.

The Cowboys really had no answers against a Roosters side that played close to their best and a repeat performance could spell trouble for South Sydney.

When the Roosters play direct and their halves don’t overly complicate things, they are the best attacking unit in the NRL. This is a team with a superb mix of power and skill in the forwards and the backline. With Mitchell Pearce in career-best form, the Roosters will be very difficult to hold out if the Rabbitohs don’t respect possession.

Indeed South Sydney got off to a slow start against the Roosters in last season’s preliminary final and found themselves 12-nil down very quickly. The Rabbitohs however regrouped well and eventually outmuscled Sydney en route to a 32-22 victory.

Even without Sam Burgess in their ranks, the Rabbitohs still possess a very strong pack and they will be primed for a big showing against a Roosters forward line containing in-form representative stars Aiden Guerra, Boyd Cordner, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Sam Moa and Issac Lui.

Throw in an enticing match-up between star fullbacks Greg Inglis and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and today’s contest could end up being one of the true highlights of season 2015.

As for the result, the Rabbitohs start narrow favourites but the Roosters at their best possess the class players required to get the job done.

Roosters by 4.
