Colin Sylvia retires from AFL

Fremantle Docker, Colin Sylvia, has announced his retirement from AFL football, effective immediately.

The 29-year-old had struggled to meet the standards required by the Dockers in the pre-season, and was unable to crack the senior side throughout the first four rounds of 2015, banished to the WAFL instead.

There were high expectations placed on Sylvia early in his career, after he was taken with a priority number three pick by the Melbourne Demons in the 2003 draft.

Sylvia left Melbourne at the end of 2013 with plenty of good football ahead of him, however managed just the six games in 2014 for the Dockers.

Unfortunately, Sylvia leaves the game as a talent that never truly reached its full potential – struggles with injury and consistency certainly played their part there. Perhaps the most telling statistic being that he averaged under 15 games per season for the 11 years at the top level (excluding 2015).

Speaking on his decision, Sylvia stated: “I would like to thank the Fremantle Football Club for the opportunity I was given to continue my AFL career after leaving Melbourne.”

“While I have really enjoyed my time here, things haven’t gone entirely to plan in a football sense and I look forward to focusing on the next phase of my life.”
