Manly halfback and Queensland Maroons utility Daly Cherry-Evans could be ruled out of the first game of the State Origin series as soon as Tuesday afternoon, with the playmaker picking up an elbow and shoulder injury in the Sea Eagles’ loss to Penrith on Monday night.

The injury has been deemed more serious than initially suspected, after Cherry-Evans finished that match for the Sea Eagles last night.

Queensland coach Mal Meninga named Cherry-Evans on the bench for Game 1 of State of Origin, which will be held at ANZ Stadium on 27 May, but there is serious doubt over whether Cherry-Evans will be able to take his spot.

UPDATE: There have been unconfirmed reports that Cherry-Evans has already been ruled out. There have also been reports coming from News that he has specifically not been ruled out by Queensland coach Mal Meninga.

If he is ruled out of the clash, it is widely reported that Cherry-Evans will be replaced by North Queensland five-eighth Michael Morgan, who scored three tries in the Cowboys’ latest outing against the Broncos on Friday night.

Cherry-Evans has come off the bench for Queensland for three seasons, but started at halfback in Game 2 of the 2014 series after Cooper Cronk was ruled out with injury.

He also played a majority of Game 1 in the halfback position for the Maroons after Cronk was taken off early.

The playmaker has long been considered Queensland’s next long-term halfback, though there is pressure coming from the Broncos’ Ben Hunt and players like Morgan.

We will keep this story updated with the latest on Daly Cherry-Evans’ injury. The results from his scans are expected on Wednesday, after which coach Mal Meninga will make a call on his fitness, and whether there will be a replacement called in.

Stay tuned for the details.
