Roger Federer will aim to make his tenth semi-final at Wimbledon when he takes on Gilles Simon at the All England Club tonight. Join The Roar for live scores of the match from 10:00pm AEST.

Federer has been in ruthless form in his first four matches in the tournament. He has lost just one set, to Australia’s Sam Groth, and conceded just 39 games in the process.

It is Federer’s 13th quarter final at Wimbledon as he looks to add to his seven titles here.

Simon, on the other hand, is in his first quarter final after making the 4th round in 2009. Before today that was his best appearance.

Simon has played in a quarter final at Grand Slam level though. In 2009, as the 6th seed, he made the quarter finals at the Australian Open. He would lose in straight sets to Rafael Nadal.

He will be looking to avoid a similar fate against Federer.

If history is anything to go by though this match will be close. Federer leads the head-to-head 5-2 but the last two matches at Grand Slam level have gone to five sets.

In 2008, in their first two matches against each other, Simon would win in Shanghai and Canada.

Federer would respond by winning the next five, including two classics. In 2011, at the Australian Open, Simon fought back from two sets down to level the match and send it to a fifth set.

Federer would survive and win 6-3.

He would also win 6-3 in the fifth set in their last meeting at Grand Slam level. In 2013, at the French Open, Simon led two sets to one before losing in five again.

His game, which involves plenty of variation, troubles Federer. At one stage he will play a powerful shot. The next he slows down the play.

If he serves well tonight, then he will win sets.

However, grass puts the match firmly in Federer’s hands. He will also have less nerves than the Frenchman.

This will be closer than what people think. Federer hasn’t been tested yet this tournament, but he will get a good challenge tonight.

Simon will win sets but just fall short again of causing the upset.

Prediction: Federer 3-2
