Up-and-coming Brisbane defender Lachlan Jackson is heading south to join rival A-League club Newcastle on a one-year deal.

Jackson completed his medical on Friday and will start training with the first team on Monday, completing the requirements to have three players aged 20 or under on the club’s senior roster.

The Townsville-born 20-year-old made three senior appearances for the Roar last season, and scored his maiden A-League goal against Newcastle with the winner in a 2-1 win over the Jets in the final regular-season round.

Also a member of the Roar’s Asian Champions League squad, the left-sided central defender will provide back up for first-choice centre-backs Nigel Boogaard and Daniel Mullen.

“Towards the end of last season, I got to make a few senior appearances for Brisbane, and in the game against Newcastle I think they saw something that they liked, which is encouraging,” Jackson said.

Jackson is the first player to be brought into Newcastle’s squad under new head coach Scott Miller.

Former Fulham mentor Miller said the struggling club, now owned by the FFA, could be a place for Jackson to develop into a regular starter.

“In Lachlan we see a player with substantial potential and someone who ought to benefit from being in a full-time environment learning from experienced professionals in his position, particularly Nigel Boogaard and Daniel Mullen,” Miller said.
