Wallabies captain Stephen Moore hopes to use America’s inability to differentiate between rugby league and union by declaring Jarryd Hayne one of theirs when they hit the US this weekend.

The Wallabies depart Sydney on Saturday and will have a few days of training at the University of Notre Dame before heading to Chicago where they play the US at Soldier Field on September 5.

“Obviously, on the back of what Jarryd Hayne’s been doing, people are talking about rugby, so we’ll probably claim him while we’re over there,” Moore said.

Hayne, who has been lighting it up for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL pre-season, is constantly referred to as a former “rugby” player.

Even the ex-NRL superstar himself seems to have given up, constantly dropping the word league when he talks to US media about the game he used to play.

Moore is as excited as anybody about the former Parramatta ace’s performances for the 49ers.

“Whether it’s league or union, he’s backed himself and it’s great to see him doing so well,” he said.

The US clash comes 18 days before the Wallabies open their World Cup campaign against Fiji in Cardiff.

“Rugby in the US is growing. We saw the All Blacks play the US over there last year, so it’s a great opportunity for us to go over and play well in a massive country,” he said.
