>>MATCH REPORT: Australia win controversial ODI over England

Match preview:

Australia won the first ODI of their series against England comfortably in the end and the action now moves to Lord’s where the two sides meet for the second game of this five-match meeting. You can follow live scores and a blog of this second ODI on Saturday from 7:30pm (AEST).

Both sides had a similar start and middle bit to their innings in the first ODI.

It was only the end that differed, allowing Australia to scoop the opener by 59 runs.

The openers for both sides were involved in a good stand, and at one stage, it looked like both had done enough to lay a foundation for the rest of the batsmen to achieve their objectives.

Australia were expected to get to a score touching 330, England were set on the path of chasing down the 305 they were ultimately set.

The middle-order didn’t live up to the expectations though, for both teams.

Australia went from 1-133 to 6-193; England were not too different as they lost five wickets for 82 runs to fall to 6-194.

Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh saved the day for the visitors.

Coming in to bat with the score at 6-193, Wade and Marsh found their positive intent from the very beginning of their partnership and then they took off towards the end. In turn, they were involved in a century-run stand for the seventh wicket, Australia’s best partnership for that wicket against England in ODIs.

The way Jason Roy and Alex Hales began their reply, it looked like the selectors had made a wise call in installing them there despite their failures in the previous T20I. Hales fell but James Taylor continued the momentum, chipping out of his crease at every given opportunity.

It was Shane Watson who triggered England’s collapse, getting of Taylor when he attempted another shimmy down the wicket.

Nathan Coulter-Nile bagged two in two and while he missed the hat-trick, it was a part of a three-wicket haul from four balls, one that broke the English backs.

Going into the second ODI, England won’t want to change too many things around despite their opening defeat.

They will want to look at their approach though; it augured well for them, their aggressive attitude yielding benefits in the New Zealand series but with the changed regulations, the tactic might need some tweaking.

On the positive side of the ledger, England will be bouyed by the performance of Adil Rashid, who bagged a four-for. The Aussie middle-order’s batting against him in the second ODI will be one to watch.

Australia went into the first ODI with just one spinner, a part-time option in Glenn Maxwell with Ashton Agar sitting out.

It worked out alright for them but they might want to look at the Lord’s track before deciding on their XI. If the pitch there is remotely similar to what was on offer in the Test played here between these two teams, it could be a good time to consider Agar as an option.
