Jason Day is now the top-ranked golfer in the world after winning the Fedex Cup playoff event the BMW Championship.

Day surpasses Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy who has held the number one ranking for around a year, although he has swapped the honour recently with Jordan Spieth.

The win cements Jason Day’s number one position at the top of the Fedex Cup leaderboard by over 2000 points.

It is Day’s fourth win from his last six starts.

Of the 70 players starting this week, Day was clearly the best golfer on show all week. He shot an opening-round 61 and a second-round 63 to be 18-under after just two rounds of play.

Day claimed the BMW by six shots over Daniel Berger, finishing on 22-under after consecutive rounds of two-under to finish.

The 27-year-old is Australia’s third player behind Greg Norman and Adam Scott to be world No.1. He is the youngest Aussie to claim the top position in the world by over three years.

Day held a six-shot lead overnight, and maintained it to cruise to victory, finishing the tournament in style with birdie on the par 5 18th.

Since missing a playoff by one shot at the British Open in July, Day has won the Canadian Open, his first major at the PGA Championship and the opening playoff event at the Barclays.

The win was Day’s fifth in 2015 and seventh US PGA tour win overall.

He is already guaranteed passage through to the final FedEx Cup playoff event next week where, should he win at East Lake Golf Club, he will also claim the $US10 million ($A13.94 million) bonus.

Matt Jones finished his efforts with a four-under-67 to finish at seven under par, which was not enough to survive to the Tour Championship next week.

Fellow Aussie Steven Bowditch finished with a 68 to be five under but has done enough to make it to the 30-man final shootout in Atlanta.
