The Australian women’s golf tour (ALPG) nine-player team, captained by former LPGA star Rachel Hetherington, has been announced for a new match-play teams event in December in Japan.

Hetherington will be joined by Katherine Kirk, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Kemp, Nikki Campbell, Nikki Garrett, Lindsey Wright, Stephanie Na and Whitney Hillier.

With prize money of about $1.15 million, the tournament involves teams representing four women’s tours – the Ladies European Tour, the ALPG, the LPGA Tour of Japan and the Korean LPGA Tour and will be held from December 4-6 in Nagoya at the Miyoshi Country Club.

Hetherington said she was looking forward very much to leading the Australian ALPG team in the historic event.

“We have a very talented group of players on our team who all know each other very well so it will be easy to pair our players up … presents a fantastic opportunity for us all to play for the first time in a top-level international team match-play competition, which will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

“We are determined to put up a great performance,” Hetherington said.

The opening two days of the three-day tournament will feature fourball and foursomes match-play, with eight players from every team competing each day.

On the final day, all nine players from each team compete in singles match-play.

The Ladies European Team will be led by playing captain Laura Davies, while the Korean LPGA team includes the 2015 US Open champion In Gee Chun.

The LPGA of Japan team includes Momoko Ueda, who in 2007 became the youngest player in the history of the JLPGA tour to win the money list.

ALPG executive director Karen Lunn said there was nothing more exciting or compelling than match-play, especially in a team environment when countries competed against each other.

“The interest in women’s golf has never been stronger, and I am confident that together we will create a world-class sporting event which showcases the depth of talent that exists globally in our sport.”
