Adam Scott says he’s “on a mission” to topple world No.1 and defending champion Jordan Spieth and win the milestone 100th Australian Open.

The 2013 Masters champion sizzled during Wednesday’s pro-am at The Australian Golf Club, firing an unofficial 10-under-par 61 to confirm Spieth’s assertion that Scott is the player to beat.

“It was something like that. I stopped counting because I didn’t want to feel like I was using them all today,” Scott said after collecting 10 birdies.

“But I did play well today. I hit a lot of shots close.”

Scott is winless since marking his rise to world No.1 last year with victory in the Crown Plaza Championship on the US PGA Tour.

The 35-year-old also hasn’t won the Australian Open since 2009 and admits he’s desperate to upstage the likes of Spieth and a dozen other former champions including Englishman Lee Westwood and have his name engraved on the Stonehaven Cup for a second time.

“Look, I’m very fired up to win the Australian Open this week. It’s got a big feel about it to me,” Scott said on the eve of round one on Thursday.

“I’ve been building it up in my own mind, just knowing Jordan is coming back to defend, the No.1 golfer in the world.

“It’s important and it’s great that he’s here because the whole golfing world will be watching what happens down here this week because he’s here.

“So he’s doing a huge favour for Australian golf, I think, and absolutely if you get a chance to play against the best and win, that’s a big deal and even more special if it’s your national championship.”
