Every now and then there’s a conversation about the best team of the year, the decade or the century. This piece, however, is not about the best team, but your favourite team.

The favourite team can be very different to the best team because it’s chosen by the heart not the head.

Usually when picking a best team there are six to eight players which cannot be left out and then we pick our own favourites to complete that team.

In a best team of the era from World Series Cricket to the present, there are six automatic choices: Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee, Allan Border, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Ricky Ponting. Once established in the Test side they never missed a game for performance issues.

But are they among your favourite players?

Did the under-arm incident completely turn you off Chappell? Did Warne’s off-field indiscretions sour your appreciation of him?

In your favourite team you may have Doug Walters, David Boon and Merv Hughes because they related to the normal man. You may have a soft spot for Bruce Reid, Mitchell Johnson or Mike Hussey.

Your favourite keeper may be Ian Healy or Rod Marsh, because you judge them only on their keeping and prefer their more aggressive personality to Adam Gilchrist.

Favourites usually have much to do with personality than ability.

Here is my favourite team – it’s a great team, an exciting team, a team of ability and personality.
