Chelsea have sacked Jose Mourinho after a disastrous run of results that has seen the EPL champions sit just a point above the relegation zone.

The club released a statement that the Portuguese coach would be leaving the club by “mutual consent”. The terms of the settlement – and Mourinho’s likely payout – have not yet been released.

Chelsea, the current Premier League champions, have had a disastrous start to the 2015-16 season and currently sit just one point above the relegation zone. Monday evening’s 2-1 loss to the league-leading Leicester appears to have been the final straw.

The sacking continues the trend of ruthlessness under Roman Abramovich. He has dismissed eight managers since taking over the club in 2003, with Mourinho’s sacking the fifth time he has fired a coach during the season. The Portuguese coach was sacked once before, ending his previous tenure at the club from 2005 to 2007. He also sacked Roberto Di Matteo only months after leading Chelsea to a Champions League triumph.

Mourinho had received support from some of his colleagues of late, with new Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp telling the press that the man who led Chelsea to three league titles did not become a bad coach overnight.

Mourinho leaves the club as the most successful manager in Chelsea history, having brought them three league titles, one FA Cup, one Community Shield and three League Cups during his two stints at the club.

Unlike their domestic form, Chelsea have done well in the Champions League, topping their pool with only one loss in the group stages.

Dutch coach and former Socceroos mentor Guus Hiddink is expected to take over from Mourinho for the rest of the season, according to various media reports. There is no word yet on whether Hiddink is considered to be a long-term option, with former Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti or current Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola considered possibilities.
