The AFL has condemned the actions of supporters who raised a racist banner at the MCG during Friday night’s clash between Collingwood and Richmond.

The sign, adorned with UPF logos and which read in part “Stop the mosques”, was displayed by the scoreboard at the City End of the ground at halftime.

“The AFL is aware that an offensive banner was displayed at the MCG during tonight’s round two game between Richmond and Collingwood,” an AFL statement issued after the game read.

“Match day security removed the banner when they became aware of it and evicted the patrons responsible.

“The AFL condemns the behaviour in the strongest terms and such actions have no place in society, and not in our game.”

A video of the banner being put in place was later uploaded to the Facebook page of far-right group the United Patriots Front.

The AFL will follow up the matter with MCG security and Victoria Police.
