Chiefs forward Leitch out for two months

Chiefs No.8 Michael Leitch is unlikely to play again for the Chiefs until at least the Super Rugby finals after injuring his thumb.

The impressive Leitch was replaced in the 51st minute of the 36-15 home win over the Melbourne Rebels on Saturday after suffering a dislocation which is forecast to sideline him for eight to 10 weeks.

The 27-year-old will probably miss the remainder of the regular season for the competition leaders but could become available when the playoffs begin from July 22.

Christchurch-born Leitch was captain of Japan at last year’s World Cup but had already indicated he wouldn’t be available for their Test matches in the June international window as he was in need of a break.

He had played in 10 successive games for the Chiefs since returning from the Japan domestic season.

Injuries have dogged the Chiefs all season.

They look set to also be without powerhouse centre Seta Tamanivalu for Friday’s game against the NSW Waratahs in Sydney because of an ankle problem.

Tamanivalu’s spot is likely to go to Charlie Ngatai, who has been out with concussion.
