For the AFL Grand Final, there's only one choice

With the current AFL season fast approaching the halfway point, it’s time to start thinking grand final entertainment.

Each year it’s hard to keep everybody happy – do we go with old acts, modern acts, Australian acts, international acts – but maybe the perfect choice has always been right here on our doorstep.

We need is an act that is both entertaining and respectful to the game. My choice is TISM.

TISM could put forward any set list and be brilliant, but I’m going to put forward a show that is entirely based around our great game and present a case that shows not only is TISM the right choice, it’s the only choice.

The Back Upon Which Jezza Jumped
What better way to get the entertainment started than with a song that pays tribute to one of the greatest grand finals of all time and one of the greatest marks. Here TISM pay tribute to the 1970 grand final, Alex Jesaulenko and the often forgotten Graeme Jenkin.

Morrison Hostel
As we are going to see, TISM pay tribute to our game in every respect possible, and in this number show their respects to one of the MCG’s favourite tenants, the Richmond Cheer Squad.

I’ll ‘Ave Ya
One of my personal favourites and here we see TISM paying tribute to the commentators of our game, in this case Sandy Roberts. They also acknowledge a new phenomenon sweeping the game of players using surnames as a first name and vice versa.

Father and Son
In this anthem TISM tell a tale we can all relate to,going to the football as a child with our father, in their case the old Morrabin Oval. And what a terrific chorus this song contains as they respectfully pay tribute to one of the greatest pieces of play that was seen so often, “Winmar, Winmar, Winmar to Lockett.”

Play Mistral for Me
Here TISM pay tribute to ex-player and commentator Rex Hunt and also ask whether the generic attitude towards Collingwood is warranted. Thought provoking stuff.

The Parable of Glenn McGrath’s Haircut
This song is not so much about football but does pay tribute to the MCG and therefore has a worthy place in their grand final performance.

Whatareya?
I’m sure every footy fan will be waiting for this one so here they will deliver. Has there ever been a single greater line ever sung in Australian music? I’m not sure but I can hear 100,000 people sing “Who is your favourite genius, James Hird or James Joyce” with great gusto.

If You’re Not Famous At Fourteen, You’re Finished
With the grand final being telecast worldwide to millions of eager viewers, why not take the time to honour one of the broadcasters themselves, TISM do that here paying tribute to Foxtel.

Greg! The Stop Sign
One of the band’s greatest hits and, with the film clip being shot at the Morrabin Oval pitch and in the changerooms with numerous St Kilda players featuring, it thoroughly deserves a place on this set.

He’ll Never Be (An ‘Ol Man River)
While not a purely football song this is still the perfect way for Australia’s greatest ever band to finish.

So there you have it,an entire set list by our country’s greatest band singing about our country’s greatest game.

For me it’s an open-and-shut case; the AFL must get TISM to perform at this year’s grand final.
