The NRL Competition Committee has recommended changes to the current golden point system, with extra time the preferred method in the result of a drawn game during the finals series.

The revised system could come into effect for the 2016 NRL finals series, and be in place for every finals series in the future.

The proposal states that two five-minute periods should be played before golden point in a move that could revolutionise the way finals games are played, giving teams more of a chance to respond in an extra time situation.

The committee worked with the game’s stakeholders including coaches, players, supporters and the Rugby League Players Association in order to reach a final consensus. They also took fan feedback into consideration, stating that two-thirds of supporters were supportive of the move to extra time, followed by golden point for the finals series.

The ARL Commission will consider the recommendation at its next meeting.

“Not only will it mean a more expansive style of football in the extra time period but it will lessen the prospect of a team being knocked out by a field goal in golden point.” stated South Sydney Coach Michael Maguire.

Other areas of focus included contact with match officials, tripping and obstruction.

The group were shown statistics demonstrating the effectiveness and accuracy of the NRL Bunker in 2016, with just three errors out of 332 try referrals (up to Round 11). So far the NRL Bunker has 99% accuracy.

The NRL is also in better shape than last year, with attendances up 6% on 2015, while television audiences are up a whopping 17%.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson and Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire were in attendance, as well as Darren Lockyer, ARL Commissioner Wayne Pearce, RLPA General President Clint Newton and NRL Chief Executive Todd Greenberg.
