After the first match ended in a tie, England and Sri Lanka will head to Edgbaston for the second match in their One Day International series. Join The Roar for live scores from 11pm (AEST).

It was an exhilarating finish to the first match of the series, and one that the Sri Lankan’s will feel got away from them, given they were on top for much of it.

In fact, it was only a last-ball six from Liam Plunkett that saved England from defeat after their top order gave way chasing down a score that seemed to be above par of 286.

Sri Lanka’s top order didn’t exactly fire either but with Kusal Perera (24) and Dinesh Chandimal (37) steadying the ship, they managed to build enough of a platform for the lower order to fire away and build the total.

It was then over to captain Angelo Matthews who ended up with a very controlled and composed 73 while being supported strongly by Seekkuge Prasanna with 59.

After David Willey and Chris Woakes made a strong start with the ball, bowling tight and taking a couple of wickets it was disappointing from an England point of view to see the score get away from them.

The chase started disastrously for England as they were reduced to 3 for 17 after 5.5 overs. Jeremy Roy, Alex Hales and Joe Root all struggled to get going, only scoring nine runs between them, and when Jonny Bairstow departed for three at 4 for 30 the pressure was on.

It was a fantastic start from Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Matthews who had decided to take the new ball, as they both picked up 2 wickets in the opening spell of bowling.

Jos Butler (93) and Chris Woakes (95*) would then combine for a 138 run partnership, holding Sri Lanka at bay fantastically while keeping the run rate pushing along at close to a run a ball.

Plunkett then came in for 22 from 11 balls as Sri Lanka failed to execute their yorkers.

This match really looks to be coming down to the battle of the top orders. With both teams having some incredibly aggressive players through the middle and lower order, building a platform for them to ‘tee off’ is the key and whichever does it better should take their team a long way to winning this one.

Prediction
Despite how well Sri Lanka played in Game 1, England’s top order shouldn’t fail dismally again and on the back of that they will win in a close one.
