Parramatta Eels’ Kieran Foran has been stripped of the captaincy and reportedly fined $5000 for missing a rehabilitation session and drinking alcohol while injured.

It’s a policy of many NRL clubs that drinking during your rehabilitation is a no-no.

Foran has already endured a number of off-field problems earlier this season, missing several games as the result of mental health issues after his relationship with his partner broke down, as well as suing News Corp for a story run about a TAB account linked to him.

He then suffered a season-ending shoulder injury which saw him required to attend regular rehabilitation sessions and stay off alcohol to aid his recovery.

Having failed to meet these requirements, he was reportedly issued with a breach notice by the Eels, fined, and stripped of his position as captain of the club.

The Eels issued a brief statement on the matter:

“The Parramatta Eels have relieved Kieran Foran of his captaincy duties for the remainder of the season so he can focus on his recovery from a shoulder injury.

“The club will not be making any comment regarding its in-house disciplinary systems.”

The 25-year-old was brought across to the Eels ahead of 2016 after seven seasons with Manly.

A Parramatta legend Peter Sterling said on Triple M that Eels’ coach Brad Arthur had originally hoped to keep the matter internal.

“He’s a little disappointed that it leaked out,” said Sterling. “He’s not the first player at the club to receive a breach notice but hopefully he’ll be the last. But he didn’t see it as a big deal as such.”

It’s yet another tale of woe in what has already been a very long and frustrating season for the Eels.

The club is most prominently facing significant penalties for years of salary cap cheating, but has also endured the past and present troubles with Foran, drugs charges leveled at Corey Norman, and the on-going saga regarding Semi Radradra’s contract.

“I don’t think there is any doubt this is the club’s worst season,” Sterling said. “Hopefully this is rock bottom and we build from here. But this has been a terrible year.”
