Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba has suffered a gruesome leg injury during the Shanghai derby in China.

The 31-year-old was taken off on a stretcher in the 62nd minute after his foot turned awkwardly in the turf and was then struck by Shanghai SIPG defender Sun Xiang.

The tackle left both fans and players in dismay as the injury evoked memories of similar incidents involving Aaron Ramsey, Eduardo and, most recently, Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.

Those injuries left the players out of action for at least eight months, with Shaw only resuming normal training in May.

Shanghai Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano said: “It could end his professional career.

“I would rather lose the game than lose Ba.

He later added: “Ba is too good to have this happen to him.”

The Senegalese striker was the leading scorer in the Chinese Super League, having netted 14 goals in just 18 appearances.
