Darren Lockyer says the NRL was right to ban Corey Norman for the remainder of the season, but Phil Gould has warned not all players have got the message on their off field behaviour.
Parramatta playmaker Norman was banned for eight game son Thursday, ending his NRL season, and fined $20,000 for a number of off field indiscretions including his drug possession conviction.
“I am happy with the punishment,” NRL great Lockyer told Channel Nine.
“The precedent was set with Mitchell Pearce and I think it is not such a bad thing for Corey.
“He has obviously got a few issues, he needs time away from footy to get those in order.
“He can go away and do that and come back next year.
“I am happy with what the NRL have done.”
Roosters halfback Pearce was suspended for eight games at the start of the season over his infamous Australia Day behaviour.
But as the NRL continues to come down hard on poor player behaviour, Penrith supremo Phil Gould, also speaking on Channel Nine, warned not all players were taking note.
“These player have to understand they are not invisible,” Gould said.
“They have responsibilities. There are still a few running the gauntlet who think they won’t get caught, but they will sooner or later.”
