After a dismal T20 series, the West Indies will try to turn their fortunes around on tour in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan who are strong favourites for the three-match one day series. Join The Roar for live scores of the first match at Sharjah from 9pm (AEST).

Despite being on tour, the world champion West Indies were favourites to take the series in the shortest form of the game, but came up very short.

After being blown out of the water by nine wickets with almost six overs to spare in the first match, they fought harder in the second, only going down by 16 runs, before being beaten by eight wickets with nearly five overs remaining in the third.

Based on that, with the West Indies’ performances only going to get worse as we move into the longer forms of the game, it makes you wonder exactly how one-sided these matches could be.

Pakistan are in fantastic form with spin bowler Imad Wasim doing all sorts of damage with the new ball – he took 11 wickets during in the T20s and set a new record for most wickets by any Pakistan bowler in a bilateral T20 series.

If the West Indies top order, which has been decimated in each game, can’t find a way to control Wasim and build a platform for their explosive middle order, then we can forget about this ODI series being anything that resembles competitive.

Azhar Ali and fellow top order player Sharjeel Khan will control the Pakistan batting order, and again it’s hard to see where the West Indian bowlers have an edge over them to take the necessary wickets.

One of the only bright spots in the T20 series for the West Indies came as Marlon Samuels bunkered down with wickets falling all around in the third match and scored 42.

He will be a key man for the West Indian batting in this ODI series, although he is in a position where he should be going ballistic off a platform more often than building one.

Captain Jason Holder will need to find a way to lift his men, and there is no better way for him to do it then decimate the Pakistan top order with the ball – if he can lead from the front then he make breathe some life into the series.

Prediction
Pakistan are on a roll after the T20 series, and playing in the UAE against a West Indies side that has struggled in everything bar the shortest form of the game, they should get this series off to a good start.
