Seven clubs have been hit with sanctions by the AFL for breaching the anti-doping code of conduct.

Hawthorn, West Coast, Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon, St Kilda and 2016 premiers the Western Bulldogs were the clubs fined by the AFL, after they failed to provide the organisation with information regarding the whereabouts of their players.

The names of the players involved were not released.

Under the AFL’s official anti-doping code, all players must provide and complete up-to-date whereabouts information 365 days of the year for testing purposes to ensure that no WADA prohibited drugs are being used or in players’ systems.

Each breach was worth $2500, with the Hawthorn Hawks copping three such fines for as many separate breaches, adding up to a total fine of $7500.

Meanwhile, the West Coast Eagles and Geelong Cats both had two breaches totalling $5000, while the remaining four clubs – the Magpies, Bombers, Bulldogs and Saints – have been hit with one breach notice and a $2500 fine each.

The AFL, however, found all of these breaches were due to administrative errors at the clubs rather than intentional breaches of the anti-doping code of conduct. The AFL’s general counsel Andrew Dillon said all clubs need to be diligent in meeting their paperwork requirements and adhering to the policy, though.

The AFL, alongside ASADA, are also still investigating the case of Lachie Whitfield, who plays for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, as well as former officials Graeme Allan and Craig Lambert.

There were reports earlier in the year that young Giants midfielder Whitfield had intentionally avoided drug testers last year. The findings of the investigation are expected to be finalised and handed down in the coming months.
