The long, painful wait for more AFL action is upon us. But what better way to help pass the time than discuss how the ladder will look next year?

1. Western Bulldogs-19-3
The Western Bulldogs winning the 2016 AFL premiership has got to count for something. I believe that the Dogs will have a very strong season and finish the season on top of the ladder.

2. GWS Giants-17-5
The GWS Giants fell six points short of a grand final berth in 2016, and they are the favourites for the premiership, but I don’t think that they will finish as the minor premiers.

3. Sydney-17-5
Sydney were the minor premiers and the runners up in the 2016 season, falling 22 points short of premiership victory. I believe that they will have another strong season and finish top four.

4. Adelaide-16-6
Adelaide almost finished in the top two in 2016, until a last-round shock loss to the West Coast Eagles made them have to go play in an elimination final against North Melbourne. I believe they will finish top four in 2017.

5. St Kilda-15-7
The Saints were unlucky to miss out on finals in 2016, finishing in ninth on percentage. I believe that they will lift on last year’s form and make the finals for the first time since 2011.

6. Geelong-15-7
I believe the Cats will drop form a little bit due to rising teams and they will finish outside the top four.

7. Melbourne-14-8
The Demons were close to making finals for the first time since 2006, but two losses to Carlton and Geelong in the last two rounds hurt them. I believe that the Demons will make finals for the first time in 11 years in 2017.

8. Hawthorn-13-9
Hawthorn were shock traders in the 2016 trade period, moving out Jordan Lewis and Sam Mitchell while trading in Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell. I think that the Hawks will have a form drop in 2017, and finish in the last position available in the top eight.

9. West Coast-10-12
The young teams that are building up the ladder will make a couple of teams have to make way, with West Coast finishing three wins behind Hawthorn to finish in ninth.

10. Fremantle-9-13
Fremantle will rebound partially from 2016’s four-win season, but will fail to make finals in the 2017 season.

11. Collingwood-9-13
Despite Collingwood recruiting mature aged players to attempt to make finals in 2017, they will have another disappointing season, resulting in the sacking of Nathan Buckley as Collingwood coach.

12. Essendon-8-14
With many of Essendon’s senior players returning next season, Essendon will finish higher up the ladder, but won’t make finals in 2017.

13. Carlton-8-14
Carlton are certainly starting to look like an exciting team, but will need another couple of seasons for their team to gel together.

14. Richmond-7-15
Despite Richmond recruiting Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy, they will have another disappointing season in 2017.

15. Port Adelaide-7-15
Port Adelaide’s team is certainly not looking in a good position after 2015 and 2016, and 2017 will result in a low finish for Port, and possibly the sacking of Ken Hinkley as coach of Port Adelaide.

16. North Melbourne-6-16
Brad Scott will have the lowest amount of wins in a season since becoming the North Melbourne coach after the delistings of Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Nick Dal Santo, and Michael Firrito, and with youth building, 2017 will be the start of a new era.

17. Brisbane-5-17
Brisbane’s first season under Chris Fagan won’t be their greatest season, but it will be a good start of the rebuild in the hands of new coach Fagan.

18. Gold Coast-3-19
Season 2017 will be another season from hell for Gold Coast, after the departures of Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia, and skipper Gary Ablett having his trade request denied, which will result in the sacking of Rodney Eade as the Suns coach.
