When the final day of the 2016 AFL trade period dawned, AFL fans had no clear indication one way or the other as to whether or not Carlton and Adelaide would reach a deal for Bryce Gibbs before the deadline arrived.

In the end, the answer was no. Bryce Gibbs did not get the trade to the Adelaide Crows that he asked for on the first day of the trade period.

The Crows baulked at Carlton’s insistence on receiving either two first-round picks or a first-round pick and a star player for Gibbs.

They were happy to give up their first-round draft pick, No.13, but the Blues refused to accept that offer.

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid said:

“Both clubs were well aware of Bryce and his family’s desire to return home, coupled with the fact he is also contracted to Carlton for a further three years.

“He is a quality player and person but like in all trades, there has to be ‘fair value’ for both parties.

“We do not believe that would’ve been the case if we were to hand over at least two first-round draft picks or a combination of players, who are crucial to our short and long term success, as was requested.

“Taking into account a large number of factors, we decided that proceeding with such an arrangement would have been irresponsible list management.”

Gibbs will now remain with the Carlton Blues in 2017, and may elect to seek a trade again at the end of next season.

Adelaide have indicated that they will now take their picks to the draft and look to acquire young talent.

It means a very quiet trade period in the end for the Crows, whose only deal made was to send Jarryd Lyons to the Gold Coast for some picks in the third round and beyond.
