Just a shocking outcome for all involved. Sympathies to the family and all his mates and also thoughts with young Abbott. A truly tragic result for everyone. A sad reminder that we aren’t invincible and further proof that everyone needs to make the most of everyday. RIP champ.

Phil Hughes passes away following head injury

You could be right there Floyd – the positive is that there’s guys like Boyd, Morris and the new skipper to help usher in the next generation.

Haven’t heard anyone say a bad word about Murphy (from inside the Kennel or the opposition)…the exception being that I believe some players are a bit peeved that he makes them look silly because he’s so articulate/educated 🙂

Bob Murphy: Right man for the job, 12 months too late

Have heard really good things about Hrovat and reckon he could be an option down the track. Don’t think he’ll be ready for it in 2 years though when Murphy will most likely be ready to hand it over again. Smith is one out of left field…. bit of a Matthew Boyd type in regards to the “hard at it” and “lead from the front”… Nice to see the Doggies with some legitimate options though.

Just how good is the featherweight division right now?!

When you talk about Edgar missing out on a title shot after THAT performance (didn’t see him being that dominant either mate) and then you’ve got guys like Lamas, Mendes, Holloway etc who aren’t even in the title shot frame at the momen (you can add Swanson to that list too, this loss was a MAJOR setback).

I reckon Edgar earned a shot with that performance, but I think that it’s the Notorious ones to lose – beat Siver and I think Dana announces Aldo v McGregor (especially now that the deck’s been cleared thanks to Swanson losing his “promised shot”)

As for the nicknames……. Notorious is infinitely better than dubbing yourself the GOAT. And trying to cash in on McGregor Incorporated ala Sonnen Enterprises is a tad on the dodgy side too…. ha ha. That being said, he is making for compelling watching and with Sonnen gone & Bisping getting smashed, the UFC needs a new “villain”.

Talk the talk: Does Conor McGregor deserve a title fight?

Tough call mate.

I see Murph being something of a “transition skipper”, leading the Dogs for a couple of years before handing over the baton to one of the younger blokes.

With that being said, there’s a bit of water to go under the bridge before one of the next generation puts their hands up.

A couple in the frame at the moment still have a bit of work to do on cementing themselves as regular senior players eg Wallis (still in-and-out of the side at the minute) or Roughead (needs to get his body right). Libba strikes me as someone who’d lead from the front and he seems to have really embraced life as an AFL player following his early indiscretion, not sure if he’s the “outspoken” type (which doesn’t necessarily count against you). Other names I’ve heard bandied are Luke Dalhaus, Jake Stringer and even Stewart Crameri (although the “saga” might have a big say in that).

Personally would be leaning towards Roughead or Wallis (based on crystal balling and assuming both can really lock down a place over the next couple of years). Roughead has huge wraps & just needs a run at it.

Thoughts yourself?

Agree with the well wishing sentiments mate, he comes across an absolute gem of feller. And while Bob may not be big from a “muscular” perspective Dougie, he’s wiry. Very, very wiry 🙂

Can’t see him imposing himself physically on too many skirmishes (he loves taking the mickey out of himself for his guns – or lack of), but make no mistake, he’s a leader. And if all else fails, get the new coach out there to sort a couple out – he’s got cannons up his sleeves!!

Trying to force a square peg into a round hole doesn’t work.

Great players don’t necessarily make great captains…just like they don’t necessarily make good coaches.

Murphy is the right choice for right now.

Ha ha. Might be going a smidge early on the GOAT talk 😉

Like your breakdown though-particularly the Swanson wins, fights Aldo & McGregor takes on Lamas or Edgar (assuming he gets by Siver-which lets face it, he should).

Would love to see a McG v Lamas fight…..the brash trash talking Irish pugilist would take his brash trash talking to new heights!!

With Chael P moving into his broadcasters role (and doing a great job I must add), The Notorious one has taken his title. Just think he needs another win or two over top 10 comp to earn his shot as opposed to getting it handed to him.

GOAT = Greatest Of All Talkers?!

Ha ha. Cheers for the read & feed

Talk the talk: Does Conor McGregor deserve a title fight?

Ha ha. And hope the third umpire (Mum) doesn’t see you out of the kitchen window…..if that happens then you’re gone (maybe not dropped from the side, but your papers have been stamped).

BUT – if you hit it, you get it….international rule on 6’ers over neighbours fences!

What cricket is the best cricket?

Perfect for any swing when I’m bowling right arm pies mate ha ha.

What cricket is the best cricket?

That’s a reasonable summation I reckon.

He certainly doesn’t seem like a “limelight hogging” or “me-me-me” type of bloke & comes across as a genuinely likeable lad. I don’t think you can question his commitment to the team while he’s there, I just think in this current climate he’d be mad not to explore his options (particularly if he’s not 100% happy in Adelaide and/or the lure of home is strong – which he’s mentioned).

I think with that right though, he rules himself out of the captaincy race for this year at least. If he delays talks til the year’s end, you can’t have him running around as skipper.

Dangerfield's destination still up in the air

Good read Dave, and while I agree that JJ is one of – if not THE – most valuable assets that a fighter has, I can’t totally agree with your summation that “jiu-jitsu and only jiu-jitsu is alive and well”.

JJ is undoubtedly one of the most devastating aspects of MMA and is a must for all fighters. BUT, you need to be incredibly well rounded to succeed at the top level, those who are specialists in one particular discipline only generally get found out at some stage. Sure they can have some success, but it’s the Jon Jones of the world that are pushing MMA to new levels.

As you stated earlier, fighters and the fight game are evolving rapidly – this means that when one style is popular, someone comes up with a counter.

That being said, there doesn’t seem to be too many ladies who have worked out a counter for a Rousey armbar……… 🙂

Jiu-jitsu and only jiu-jitsu the key in modern MMA

It’s the new “business era” that sport/AFL has become – we want loyalty and “one club” sensibilities, but that’s not a two way street & clubs are happy to offload players if it suits them. You can’t begrudge a bloke exploring his options in this current climate.

Anyone saying that they wouldn’t want Danger is kidding themselves – he’s an out and out gun. That being said, you need everyone pulling int he same direction if you are to be successful. The club is bigger than the individual (blah blah blah – pardon the boring old cliche) and no-one should bankrupt themselves for one player.

Using the reigning premiers as the example – lost Buddy but won the flag. The Cats in recent years took pay cuts and tasted the ultimate.

Has Danger cost himself a shot at the captaincy? Probably – can’t give it to him unless he commits 100% to the club and that doesn’t look like happening in the near future. Maybe down the track who knows…..

Dangerfield's destination still up in the air

Amen. Test cricket hands down all day everyday. Except when you’re on the beach. With a frothie. And a half taped up tennis ball that swings a mile. And then it’s French cricket all day everyday….
