It’s 5:40 AM and my love of football has once again got me up at a ridiculous hour. This time it is not a European final or a Socceroos friendly, rather a tournament few people in Australia would know is occurring in Mexico, the FIFA under 17’s World Cup.
The off-season break is the football fans’ equivalent of solitary confinement. Even this year’s World Cup, with its 4:30am kick-offs, ensured that no sunlight was seen, and social life was barely evident.
Advertisements on the radio, reports in the paper, and a vuvuzela in the stands … the A-League arrived in the Gippsland region. The new boys Melbourne Heart took on season three champions the Newcastle Jets and local football fans braved the cold weather to fill the grandstand.
When looking for an upcoming young star in version four of the A-League, it was hard to look further than Brisbane Roars’ attacking midfielder Mitch Nichols.
