Cheika gets a pass because a) he’s one of the Randwick old boys, and b) he’s Australian. If any international coach were in charge of the Wallabies right now, you and Spiro would be howling daily for him to pack his bags so an Aussie can step in and ‘play the Aussie game’. How is that working out, incidentally?

Sacking Michael Cheika won't solve the endemic Wallaby problems

No, this is not the right place. The place you’re looking for is the 1930s.

I love how this argument boils down to ‘but if we can’t tolerate the intolerant how can we say we are truly tolerant’.

If only Rugby Australia could generate hard-hitting forwards with ball handling skills the way they generate column inches.

The Folau case is a public relations disaster for Qantas and Rugby Australia

Heads should roll. CA should get on the front foot and suspend all involved for six months.

The integrity of Australian cricket is in tatters

Having a fly half defend at the back is not in itself a bad strategy IF they are a good kicker and cover tackler. Cooper was a poor tackler, while Foley is a poor kicker. It’s somewhat astonishing they are still trying the same approach after eight years and without a credible alternative.

Why Bernard Foley has nowhere to hide

As opposed to what? A ‘real man’ who flings insults behind the anonymity of the internet?

I hope Raelene Castle ticks the crucial boxes, not just the right ones

Pretty much. “I’m not sexist but…”

Good article.

Interesting to see who on the Roar is a closet MRA based on these comments…

Maybe it’s time to break the bro-code

This is not tarnishing your legacy. Tarnishing your legacy is when you do something like switch codes, fail and come running back with your tail between your legs (Marshall, Hayne).

Moving from one high performing club to another in the back end of your career is just a good deal, who wouldn’t pass it up.

Cheika mixes things up, names new captain in Wallabies team to play Barbarians

It’s pretty simple. The sporting news cycle here runs for about a week, so if we play the All Blacks in back to back weeks no one thinks we have a chance because all articles that week are delayed responses to the previous week’s loss. But if you go past a week, the column writers have some inches to fill so they start talking about “signs the Wallabies might have found the secret to beating the All Blacks”.

Only win against All Blacks will do for Foley

Beale has grown in my estimation this year after seeing him defend at 12 against SBW. Foley never seems to play well unless he has Beale around, so I can live with them both having a lock on the gold jersey. Foley is at least better than Cooper aka Mr Brainsnap.

Folau would be better off on the wing if Karmichael Hunt was fully fit. My ideal backline would be:

Genia
Foley
Haylett-Petty
Beale
Kurindrani
Folau
Hunt

With Speight, Lealifano and any halfback who isn’t Phipps on the bench. That gives plenty of options for cover – Lealifano can play 10 or 12, Speight can come on at either wing or either Folau, Haylett-Petty or Beale can be shifted to fullback.

Why Michael Cheika will live or die by the Waratah ‘holy trinity’

You stole this line from Sean Micallef…

Israel Folau cops backlash for gay marriage tweet

Argument or not the statement is incongruous. I’m guessing he wants to publicly disassociate himself from the ARU’s stance (which is fine) but that’s a poorly worded attempt.

Israel Folau cops backlash for gay marriage tweet

He’s entitled to his view and shouldn’t be subjected to ad homeniem for simply voting no. However it is a pretty lame argument he’s making – I respect everyone but apparently not enough to think they should have equal rights under the law?

Multiply that by 2 and we’ll talk.

Chieka must play Hooper at six

Nothing like a gracious winner eh.

Highlights: Wallabies blow their big chance to win Bledisloe 2

God this is embarrasing. We’re no longer a Tier 1 nation.

That was a red card any day of the week. He never attempts to leave the ground and still interferes with his legs, so it’s pretty clear. That comment that Havili ‘jumped into him’ is nonsense, plain and simple.

The real issue with the tackling in the air laws is when two players are competing for the ball in the air, and the one who doesn’t win the ball makes contact and is penalised for it. If they are attempting to wrap or impede the player while in the air then sure, penalty, but often this year the referees have interpreted any contact as a penalty, even if most of it is inevitable from trying to compete for the ball.

The question is whether this is the right thing for the game. Player safety is important, but the AFL seems to be able to get it right – the rules on marking still allow for contact to happen if it’s part of a fair and inevitable contest for the ball.

The laws are fine, the card was correct and the Crusaders are worthy Champions

Brumbies problems this season:

1. Skills. Like the rest of the Australian conference really, just not capable of holding onto the ball, making passes go to hand, clearing out rucks effectively etc when it counts and over 80 minutes.
2. Attacking kicks. Every time they do this it seems to be the worst option. Either Harwera or Powell kicks and the backs don’t have time to chase, or Godwin or Fardy (?!!) grubber the ball straight into touch. It’s pretty much been cheap handing over of possession.
3. Game management. The loss of Lealiafano and Toomua hit really hard in this respect, and their replacements aren’t much of a patch. Hence so many close losses.

There are plenty of positives though.

The Brumbies' playoffs capitulation sums up their 2017 season

Barrett could have won the series with the boot on two occasions, yes. But that doesn’t change the poor refereeing in the past two games and the impact they had on the outcome.

In game 2, the ref ignored a swinging arm on Naholo which the judiciary later deemed worthy of a yellow, and enforced a letter of the law penalty for a fine tackle in ridiculous circumstances, which ended up deciding the match.

Last night, the ref gave Kaino a yellow for a similar contact, and ignored the law and overturned his original decision on the offside ruling, which took away the chance for the match to be decided (either by playing on when ALB was rampaging, or awarding a penalty kick).

Closely fought games such as these deserve better and more consistent refereeing.

In a game of fine margins, Barrett cost the All Blacks a series victory

They missed that kick so I would hardly call it a gift three points.

God the Brumbies are hopeless.

Geez, not really the finest week for the Roar. First Spiro slanders Rob Clarke without evidence, now David Lord is attempting to mansplain a stupid and deplorable comment from McEnroe.
