Just a sports fan. Football in winter, cricket in summer. Casual interest in Union and tennis. Limited interest in AFL, soccer and sprinting.

Hi Dilkington. Think it is the salary cap that is unenforceable to be bound to legally.

So the NRL is going after player managers? They're getting closer...

Disagree. Centuries/innings per live test is better than average.

No room for Joe Root or Kane Williamson in my World Test XI of the decade

Jeez how long did Chanderpaul play for?

Rogers? Australia lacked good opening partnership since Langer retired.

Yeah agree about dhoni

Do not agree with Philander, 50/50 about Anderson. Would prefer to see Johnson and Cummins in there. Average is not everything. Like Steyn though. This decade probably lacked the great spinners of the 90s and early 00s.

Yes, this and the player laughing all the way to European or Japanese union competitions.

Though untested, my understanding is that such contracts are unenforceable. Also morally, players can do whatever they want within their limited window of athletic marketability, to make whatever they need to make.

Player agents on the surface appear to exploit younguns who would be better off doing a compulsory subject on contract law in school, evidenced by Orr who got Sonny Bill only 400 000 a year from Bulldogs and God knows what he got for himself.

Salary cap is too low too. Too much money goes to the NRLs front office at the moment. Players can strike very easily atm.

Like a lot of economically disadvantaged people in Australia, he was not lucky enough to grow up in a socio economic culture/class where he had a realistic opportunity to make 750 000 a year being a lawyer or entrepreneur due to cultural reasons. Football was something he could do due to cost and culture.

Hate this “its a game” attitude. Even making a season in the NRL is the physical culture equivalent of getting full marks in the HSC. Literally, 100. The NRL gives back to the community beyond just gameday entertainment. It provides a literal public expose on organisational behaviour.

Latrell is free to do what he wants how he wants to do it to get his

Hi thebush ????,

AFL and NRL combined are also almost a billion a year. There is a thought about where cricket ought to be near in this country if it were properly managed historically or even in the past 20 years.

BBL is too little too late, but still shows that cricket was the sleep ???? walking giant of Australian sport. Very bad administration. Never really thought about what could make the short format as marketable as possible. Still think 20/20 not the most optimum format for doing this. Should sit down with the greats and intelligent marketers to get it right. Make it happen.

As for England, 2005 showed it can capture the broader public’s imagination over there. Learn how to keep it. Start by giving working class boys from the north with good hand eye coordination free bats. But who knows with England the way it is changing demographically.

India tour the right time to start limited-overs refresh

Was this Cuthbertson? Heard he was a star sitting in his car down at A grade training. Think Mitchell is on a slightly(and I mean massively) higher level.

Leave Latrell alone, he's done nothing wrong

It does not have to be this way. A well formatted and promoted competition among England, Australia and South Africa could net more money than anything India could manage whilst it is still a 3rd world country. Cricket is run very poorly. For Christ’s sake, they still have test series which structurally came about in the days of international boat travel. No reason cricket can not be on a similar level to soccer in England as the summer sport, or as the combined AFL/NRL competitions in Australia, bringing with it t.v. contracts of a similar size that could squash India’s monetary dominance.

He is not twice the player of young Dugan though. Very discouraging watching Dugan play fullback last year for the Sharks and let in so many tries because he does not have the Vo2 max to get into position to stop them. That was a lot of points a match that he could have made a play at stopping if he worked on his beep test. But that is slightly off topic

Leave Latrell alone, he's done nothing wrong

It appears that the Roosters are not banking on having a good 2020 without Cronk, and hence do not want him for an extra season as they rebuild, even if it means dropping a couple of games without his presence.

Latrell does not want to still be there when the Roosters next have a roster that they believe will be able to have a crack at the premiership, so they are making the decision to develop the next centre who does.

Leave Latrell alone, he's done nothing wrong

Agree, but it was a decent deal and I doubt any Roosters who are part of two premiership winning teams go broke in retirement if you know what I mean. They look after them post-football there.

“What’s also interesting is that while more data, computer analysis and resources are available these days for selectors, it does not seem to be improving their ability to choose who will succeed at the highest level.”

It is all about the intent. Selectors should be able to identify the intent and make sure they have access to the cricketing experience. Nothing to do with what a computer might be able to identify better than the naked eye.

Want to be an Australian selector? You only have to be right 40 per cent of the time

Yeah I never really followed rugby union but I always liked watching Larkham play. Would have been interesting if he had made the switch to NRL to see how he would have done against the Johns, Mundine, Fittlers, Daleys etc.

Think he only got a start because he was lucky enough to be coached by MacQueen in an obscure league or something. Shows how bad rugby union in Australia is at identifying talent based on character and personality.

Very smart guy just from reading his quotes in the article. Good character too. Hope he makes it as a coach.

Enjoying reading your articles. Interesting to get perspective from on rugby union tactics from someone who has grown up with the game. Stuff like Israel Folau’s poor positional play, that I do not notice watching on t.v. or have the nuanced understanding of rugby union to understand when it is exploited.

How Stephen Larkham is finding his feet at Munster

What a terrible headline 👎

It’s all in the Head for Australia’s talented number six

I always had a soft spot for Richard Chee Quee though he played no tests. A lot harder to play for Australia though.

Bowling is New Zealand's biggest concern

Hi Dutski,

Look at any professional rugby union team in NZ or the Warriors and you will get it straight away. Cricket obviously has some cultural issues in NZ in terms of who it connects with. Do not misunderstand me, I am not implying that 1) Cricketers did not earn their spot in the national team in NZ, or that there should be a racial criteria ever, or 2) A conspiracy of NZers are trying to keep the Islander races out of professional cricket.

But there are some obvious issues going on there.

Bowling is New Zealand's biggest concern

Hi Punter,

Yeah obviously with your point about soccer. Scotland is their obvious rivalry and they do not play them in the home nations cup anymore. Conversely, the point may be made that it is in Britain’s interest in the post-Brexit era to reestablish as close relations to the old Commonwealth as possible, as well as in our interests, and there might be interest from that perspective in doing those things deemed expedient for that purpose. The only problem is that the quality of Australian soccer has declined since the days of the Kewells and the Neils, when it would at least have been a contest.

The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry

Bowling is not NZ’s biggest concern… Not even the selection apartheid or whatever goes on to produce a very undiverse team…

NZ’s biggest problem is that the rest of the cricket world is going to realise that what was a tolerable annoyance(NZ being able to field a professional cricket team when they are qualitively worse than most Australian state teams) is going to become painfully obvious over the summer.

Bowling is New Zealand's biggest concern

Yeah look. It would be a great idea as a sporting event over new years if you could actually get a top strength English soccer side over here. Would stop the nation each year and be a promoter’s dream. Good for relations between the nations too in the post-Brexit era. But do you have any idea how many curmudgeonly Englishmen you would have to get to say yes. Only way I could reasonably see it happening is if the queen or Prince Charles lobbied them personally as in the interests of the Commonwealth to make it happen.

The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry

Great to compliment the Australian players for this victory, just like the other players that did well against what are qualitively, Sheffield Shield teams.

Lyon gives Australia a massive edge over New Zealand

See no reason why rugby union rights is not worth at least 90 million a year. If foxtel does not want(assuming that from the 20 million a year offer), think entrepreneurs will step in and make a killing.

Foxtel versus rugby: The next battle

TPAs should be a win-win for the league.

The game gets promotion through having the best players promoted turning them into household names and instantly recognisable to the casual observer, and the best players get paid, making the French and English rugby union competitions less attractive.

If they are going down than it is not a good sign.

TPAs getting smaller in the NRL is not a good thing
