From a Parisian hotel room, Sonny Bill Williams once explained the financial difficulties faced by Australian bus drivers. French bus companies pay above award,…
Like a great many Australians, I have achieved nothing in the sporting sense. As a cricketer, I was once out caught and hit wicket…
Appreciate your point bbt
Problem for the Storm is, they already won a comp in 1999 which was clean.
Are you suggesting there should have been cap concessions given to them even after they won the comp with no help?

Quite a few hysterical responses there.
A few things,
Suggesting the Melbourne should keep these players purely because they developed them is irrelevant to the thrust of this yarn. Many clubs face that issue.
Whether the salary cap is fair and what should be done to those in breach are two very different things.
But if the NRL is fair dinkum about having a salary cap, then there has to be some developed thought on how to tackle offenders. The club involved should derive no benefit at all. I fail to see how that is a controversial statement.
To Storm fans – Its not up to you to decide what the talking points of the code are. A club on the cusp of a premiership 2 years after a heinous breach is a big story, and not all angles may be to your liking. Deal with it.

I thought it was a bit like in the Vietnam War.

Does anyone know what Buzz Rothfield thinks on the issue?

One theory I’ve heard, is that the past decade of off field misdemeanours were engaged in solely to oust Gallop from the game. Now that he’s gone, and with no one to rebel against, we are witnessing a ceasefile. Good luck to Gill if he gets the job, but you get the sense this mob won’t be happy until they’ve burnt the house down with him in it,

Great yarn along similiar lines By Sam de Brito in SMH, featuring this ripsnorter.

A sneaking suspicion about our Wallabies
Whats evident from a lot the opinions on this thread is that Sonny is now at the point where neither leaguies or rah rahs are prepared to ‘own’ his performances. Eg “wait til he has to tackle gallen” or “he wouldnt even make the starting XV if Con Smith was fit” … Both camps now see him as an imposter of sorts. Doubt he cares though.

We really lack that ability to routinely break a tackle with ball in hand. He stood out because of that abillty. The Wallabies just dont have the go forward that a player like that provides. A lot of league players could provide that punch i reckon. Samo gives it a go but hes 63.

In the eyes of the truly one eyed supporters you prob have a point. But if his career continues on its current trajectory then it will only be considered a spectacular success.True sports fans will appreciate this. Never mind some misguided emotional neediness about “legacy”.
Sonny Bill in a league of his own
I dont know what he was on at the chiefs/all blacks, but i’d be very surprised if it wasnt around the $850’000 mark of his Roosters deal. I dont think money was the main factor for his NRL return. He seems to have belatedly discovered his moral compass. Don’t know about demonizing code hoppers. Some theatrically label it treachery etc but its nowhere near as complicated as that for the player. Football codes are not cults, they are employers.
Sonny Bill in a league of his own
He’s only back for 1 season at this stage, so unless he really digs league, I think you’re right he will go back to rugby. He’ll be feeling pretty weird at the moment I reckon. Really just starting to show how good he can be in rugby and now its over for the time being save for a silly stint in japan. He may literally kill the opposition over there.

I don’t know watch AFL so I cant comment, but in league, the opposite is true. I feel the standard of commentary has dropped significantly as a result of “elite players only” recruitment policy. Brad Fittler may well have been the Brad Fittler of five eights, but he is the Lance Thompson of the commentary box.

What irritates me the most is how gambling is marketed as an expression of aussie larrikinism. It gets under your guard that way. Similar to grog I guess.

The impact Ben Barba is presently having on games is unbelievable. I dont think I’ve seen anyone turn in game changing plays in both attach and defense so regularly. It’l like there is 4 of him out there. He needs to stay fit otherwise canterburys season is over,.
