Five sentimental NBA Free Agent signings you'd like to see

I think that Nash will end up in Toronto. It’s too good an offer for him to pass up, especially when it’s his last paycheck of his career!

Five sentimental NBA Free Agent signings you'd like to see

There is a chance that Kyrie can play for Australia – under article 23 for the FIBA Eligibility and National Status of Players. “A player who has played in a main official competition of FIBA (see article -1) after having reached his seventeenth (17) birthday may not play for a national team of another country. However, in exceptional circumstances the Secretary General may authorise such a player to play for the national team of his country of origin if he is ineligible to play for such country according to this article -23 and if this is in the interest of the development of basketball in this country.”

So It all comes down to what Patrick Bauermann the Secretary General of FIBA has to say on the matter, If the USA are willing to release him and if Basketball Australia want to have him.

That’s great! Wish I was in Sydney tonight to go to the game! Would love to see my boys beat the Wildcats in front of a packed Kingdome!

What's really holding back the NBL

There are a number of reasons. I’m sure that Fox Sports want to have the NBL on their network, if the price is right.

Fox Sports want to have as many live sport rights as possible, especially Australian content.

One big thing for them at the moment is increasing the amount of live content on their channels, especially seeing as they are creating ‘single sport only’ channels that are taking away content off Fox Sports 1,2,3 such as the new AFL channel and Speed.

Summer is traditionally a lull in quality content/ratings for Fox Sports, with the only major sport programs that they have on in Prime Time in summer is the Big Bash (for a month), The Australian Open (for a couple of weeks) and A-League, compared to winter where they have AFL, Rugby League & Rugby Union on week in week out, completely filling their prime-time friday & saturday night schedules.

Their last deal, for the 2009-10 season was a bit of a farce. Fox Sports wern’t that interested in the NBL then because there was no Sydney or Brisbane teams. Foxtel’s biggest markets are Sydney (42% penetration) and Brisbane (35% penetration) and they felt that without a presence in those cities, it wasn’t going to work out for them. They cut a last minute deal that was to show a game a week as Fox Sports decided to show ‘good faith’ to the NBL after their decade long partnership. This is a different situation now that the Sydney Kings are back and there will more than likely be a Brisbane team in the competition by the time the next TV rights deal will be set.

It’s not a matter of Fox Sports not wanting the NBL, it was that the NBL wanted to be back on FTA and signed a deal with what they thought was going to be a ‘Sport only’ channel with more than 1 live game every week and a magazine program “Overtime”. At the time it looked like a great deal, however, 18months into that deal, it’s a different story. One isn’t a sport only channel anymore, there are no Live NBL games being shown and “Overtime” isn’t on air either.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if the NBL in their next broadcast deal approach both Fox Sports and Ten/One to try and work out a deal where they get a few live games & a magazine program on Fox Sports and a game or two on delay or highlights on One.

As I said before, Fox Sports have never said that they don’t want the NBL, the NBL just didn’t want Fox Sports this time around. And hey, they got a good deal… Until Murdoch came and changed Ten’s future plans….

What's really holding back the NBL

The NBA and NBL can co-exist on Pay TV. NBA Live games are during the day and NBL live games are in the evening… Even though ESPN show replays of their games in the evening, Fox Sports could just not show Live games on the nights that the ESPN have had a game on that day!

Great article!

The NBL TV ratings have been on average between the 20K and 30K range in the 5 metro cities this season. This is actually on par with what the ratings were when the NBL was on Fox Sports, excluding the final season that it was shown on the channel. (I exclude that year because it was a 1 year contract off the creation of the “New NBL”. It was the first season of no Sydney & Brisbane teams and Fox Sports didn’t do any on channel promotions for the competition and cut it’s weekly Wrapup show with Steve Carfino and John Casey). Average ratings in the final season were around 15K.

I don’t understand why the League can’t look at doing a deal where they share the broadcast rights between Ten/One and Fox Sports or ESPN. This would surely be a win for the league because it would mean more games shown, plus the added extra of Fox sports showing their games live…

Johnno, Whilst Durant isn’t the biggest SF getting around he is tailor made for this position in the International Game. There isn’t much one on one defense at the FIBA level so I don’t think that he would be seen as a weak link at all. Plus as it stands, the guys who he will be defending against out of qualified teams are Nicholas Batum, Luol Deng, Rudy Fernandez, Andres Nocioni, Marcus Vinicius, Mohamed Hdidane, Zhu Fangyu and our own Joe Ingles. You can’t tell me that he isn’t strong enough to guard these guys?

Durant has more than quietened the critics over the last few years about his defensive ability. This season alone, he is the leading SF in terms of Blocks per game and is 3rd in SF’s in rebounding (Behind LeBron & Luol Deng).

Team USA for London 2012

Thank you very much Carl! I sent you an email yesterday evening from the email that The Roar supplied me for you. I look forward to chatting with you!

Yeah I totally agree… Once the Boomers extended squad is announced in the coming months i’m going to re-do my side. Rest assured. It looks like Julian Khazzouh will more than likely be in the twelve!

How the Boomers 2012 squad should line up

Hey Wingback.

The USA tend to not pick too many Centres and power forwards in their sides. They are generally quite guard heavy, thats why there aren’t too many of them.

Howard, Love, Bosh, Anthony can easily cover the positions themselves. Even if need be, LeBron can play PF, he’s got the size and actually has a pretty good postgame.

Heal played 6 regular season games whilst Tony Parker was injured and was fighting it our with Jason Hart for Parker’s backup position. Unfortunately for us Aussies Hart won the battle!

Don’t forget Chris Anstey (Dallas and Chicago), Luke Schenscher (Portland and Chicago) and David Andersen who played the last couple of seasons with Houston, Toronto and New Orleans…
Ricky Grace, Rob Rose & Loggins wern’t “Australian” when they played in the NBA.
Shane Heal played for Minnesota and San Antonio.

Thanks Ben!

No he didn’t play any games for the Hawks. Luc Longley is still the first Australian to play an NBA Game.

I came across it sort of by accident really. I’ve always been quite knowledgeable on past Olympic teams so knew of Rodwell as a name but didn’t really know anything about him. A while ago I was going through past NBA Drafts to see if there was any big name NBA players who were taken in some really late rounds and recognised the name. Then I started to really research it and found out it was the same Rodwell!

I’d really like to try and track him down and have a chat to him about his experiences. However, my guess is that he is probably a pretty quiet guy, if I was him i’d sing from the rooftops if I was in his position!

Thanks James!
