Cricket legend Brian Lara turned back the clock but it wasn’t enough to prevent his side losing to the Perth Scorchers in Monday’s exhibition Twenty20 clash at Aquinas College.

In reply to the Scorchers’ 5-179, 45-year-old Lara made an unbeaten 51 off 50 balls in the Australian Legends’ total of 5-129.

Adam Gilchrist (1), Justin Langer (9), Andrew Symonds (13) and Dean Jones (16) were among the Legends who all fell cheaply in the hunt for quick runs.

West Indian Lara, who retired from ODIs in 2007, was the only batsman on his side to pass 20.

Ashton Turner was the hero for Perth, scoring 75 off 38 balls, while new recruit Michael Carberry (28), Sam Whiteman (22) and Marcus Harris (23) also chipped in with handy scores.

Scorchers paceman Yasir Arafat, who played for the Legends to make up for the late scratchings of Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting due to the rescheduled fixture, finished with 2-30 off four overs.

Symonds (1-43) and Andy Bichel (1-50) found the going tough, but Michael Kasprowicz (1-22 off four) was at his miserly best.

“This is so much fun,” former Test star Langer said.

“To be on the same field as Brian Lara – I used to idolise him. Even when I played against him I loved watching him bat.”

The Scorchers won last season’s BBL title, but they will start their Championship defence missing star players Mitch Marsh (Test duties), Shaun Marsh (Test duties) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (hamstring).

Perth’s first match is against the Adelaide Strikers at the WACA on December 22.
