AFL coaching is currently an easy caper for Geelong’s Mark Thompson. “There wasn’t too much to worry about,” he said after watching his side dismantle finals aspirant Adelaide by 68 points at AAMI Stadium last night.
Last start, Thompson was so relaxed during Geelong’s 135-point away drubbing of West Coast he munched on a salad roll during the game instead of barking orders.
Last night, he would have been excused for doing similar as his charges offered a footballing blueprint.
The Cats silenced Adelaide’s parochial home crowd with a stunning four-goals-to-none opening stanza.
The ladder leaders then enhanced that lead in compelling style in a performance the understated Thompson described as “pretty reasonable”.
“We have never come to this stadium and won by so much against a pretty classy opposition,” he said.
“When you come over to Adelaide and win by 60, 70 points you would have to be happy with that.
“We had a fantastic week off and they came back to training in great spirits, you had a feeling they were going to come over and play decent footy.”
Geelong’s ball movement was superb, and their desire for the contest relentless.
“There was a lot of things that pleased me,” Thompson said.
“The first quarter was one, our intensity and just our ability to move the ball.
“Just our quick ball use was heading to be at a level that you want to be.
“We didn’t play the perfect game and we haven’t played it yet and we will continue to strive for it and strive to be a better team.”
