Manchester United and Chelsea kept up the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal today with home wins over Derby County and Sunderland respectively.

United beat bottom-placed Derby County 4-1 at Old Trafford where Ryan Giggs scored a landmark 100th league goal, to move on to 36 points from 16 matches.

Chelsea beat Sunderland 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to climb to 34 points from 16 matches.

Arsenal, who play at Middlesbrough on Sunday, lead the table with 37 points from 15 games.

Everton maintained their recent good run with a 3-0 home win over Fulham at Goodison Park where Yakubu Aiyegbeni scored a hat-trick.

Newcastle United scored a late goal to beat Birmingham City 2-1 at home while Portsmouth won 3-1 at Aston Villa in an early kick-off.

Liverpool meet Reading later today while four other matches are scheduled for Sunday.

Meanwhile, England defender Wes Brown could leave Manchester United after rejecting a new contract, said manager Alex Ferguson.

Brown, whose existing deal expires at the end of the season, has failed to agree terms on an extended contract with the Premier League champions and will not receive another offer.

“He has not agreed anything, which is entirely up to Wes,” Ferguson told reporters.

“We feel we have made him a good offer.

“We have had several meetings with his agent. Some agents are difficult. They have rejected our last offer so that’s the end of it. We won’t be going back.”

Ferguson said the 28-year-old, who has been at Old Trafford since leaving school, may leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

“It’s a possibility. It would be a disappointment,” said the United manager.

The versatile Brown has been a regular for United this season, playing at right back in place of injured captain Gary Neville.
