Football Federation Australia has announced plans for an annual match between Australia and Turkey to coincide with ANZAC Day.

The first two games will take in Gallipoli on April 24 and 26 between the two nation’s under-16 sides with plans afoot for the senior teams to meet annually in future years.

The announcement was made by Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley and Turkey’s Consul-General Renan Sekeroglu in Sydney on Wednesday.

“Australia and Turkey have built a relationship of peace and friendship based on a shared history and this annual football event will forge the friendship between our nations at all levels,” said Buckley.

“I am sure both games will be encountered with a great enthusiasm by the two nations and pave the way for further enhancement of the strong interaction between our two peoples,” said Sekeroglu.
