UFC 130: Jones vs Hamill

It’s an event that’s lacking in title fight lustre, but the main card at UFC 130 still packs enough punch to make for some interesting match-ups this Sunday.

The upcoming pay-per-view, which takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, was originally scheduled to host the lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

The fight, which would have been the third meeting of the pair, was cancelled as injuries forced both fighters to withdraw.

Taking its place atop the card is a light-heavyweight tilt between Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Matt ‘The Hammer’ Hamill.

Jackson was originally slated to face Thiago Silva, but the latter’s drug-related issues imposed a change to the card.

Both are coming into the fight with wins at UFC 121 and UFC 125, respectively.

For Jackson, a victory over Hamill puts him in a good position to face any of the top contenders. A rematch with either Lyoto Machida or the winner of the Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua – Forrest Griffin bout at UFC 134 would be likely for late 2011/early 2012.

For Hamill, a win would mark the biggest name on his resume to date (DQ win over current champ Jon Jones not-withstanding), and puts him deep into the heap of light-heavyweight contenders.

The co-main event features former heavyweight titleholder Frank Mir against TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson. In Mir’s previous fight, the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt knocked out faded legend Mirko ‘Cro cop’ Filipović in the second round at UFC 119. Nelson is coming off a loss against current TUF coach Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117.

A win for either combatant elevates their status in the heavyweight rankings, perhaps a fight or two away from facing current champion Cain Velasquez. A fight with the loser of the upcoming Shane Carwin – Dos Santos match-up, or against a healthy Brock Lesnar could be in the mix for the victor.

The pay-per-view card also includes heavyweights Stefan Struve and Travis Browne. A welterweight tilt between Brazilian Thiago Alves and Rick Story is also on the card, and fan favourite ex-US Marine Brian Stann takes on Jorge Santiago.
