Ode to Bill (to the tune of Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel)

While Khe Sanh will never leave the upper echelons of the fan-voted ‘best ever’ rock tracks lists, I’ve decided it could do with a alternate version for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in New Zealand (with apologies to Cold Chisel).

Left my heart to Samoa, Sydney town
Sold my soul for World Cup tix, to some black hearted fans
Had to be at Auckland, September
Crossed the ocean from the Silver City
And it’s something only tragics understand

About the long forgotten seating guarantees
How there were no Bledisloe heroes in 1983
How we sailed into Auckland harbour
Saw a kiwi but I couldn’t kiss her
And they were primed and I was in a hostile land …

It was like so many more from world cups gone
Pool matches all so empty, until we found our finals home
And the Scrums were often brutal
Lineouts always close
And local hearts were held in winning All Black teams

And the aussie fans were screaming, beers long, wallets lean
Our loose forwards smashed them, where the haka once had been
Rolling mauls made me jumpy
And I never stopped to scream
For a third world title won by Dingo Deans

So I walked across the town with Bundy bear
Tried to find a pub to settle back,
Where my broken voice could heal
Talked of Cooper, Beale, and Horwill
… David, Will and Beau
And All Black fans still drove me round the bend

And I’ve watched every match from year to year
And each loss seemed much harder, one more year the worse for wear
And I’ve been back to my 19 91
You know the answer sure ain’t there
But I’m rewinding back, to check things out again

You know the last plane out of Sydney’s almost gone
Only seven Q Club hours, and I’ll be landing in Auckland
There ain’t nothing like the kisses
From a jaded Air NZ hostess
I’m gonna hit some kiwi nightspot all night long

Well the last plane out of Sydney’s almost gone
Yeah the last plane out of Sydney’s almost gone
And it’s really got us worried
The Cups approaching in a hurry
Last chance to Bring home Bill has nearly come
(Repeat twice)
