Love him or love to hate him, despite his rude, obnoxious and arrogant persona; Chael Sonnen is one hell of a talented fighter. He showcased his tremendous wrestling ability in his dominant win against Brian Stann at UFC 136 over the weekend.

It was an unusual occurrence for us not to hear Sonnen trash talk about his opponent before a fight and perhaps it was because he knew better than to open his trap about a man who has served his time for the USA, while earning a Silver Star in the process.

It was quite possibly the smartest move he’s ever made.

Sonnen has his fair share of haters, but to bad mouth a fellow countryman who has fought in a real war would have taken it to a whole new level.

But it seems that old habits die hard for Sonnen.

He couldn’t help but run his mouth in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, calling out Anderson “Spider” Silva:

“Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck.

“Super bowl weekend, the biggest rematch in the business. I’m calling you out Silva, but we’re upping the stakes. I beat you, you leave the division. You beat me, I leave the UFC forever” he went on to say.

I completely understand Sonnen’s desire to call out Spider for a re-match but it should have stopped there.

I thought I had accidently changed the channel and was watching a dose of the WWE because that’s certainly what it sounded like, a scripted act and marketing ploy.

Of course, I want to see a Sonnen/Anderson re-match, who doesn’t? However, I think the fight itself speaks volumes without adding the WWE-like theatrics and monologues to entice people to tune in.

The UFC does a mighty fine job of bringing in an audience on its own merits and it does not need to be tainted by these kinds of shenanigans.

That is not what the UFC is all about.

I spend so much time trying to defend the MMA and when I see something like this happen I can only think that stunts like this only hinders the integrity of the sport.

I guess at the end of the day, everyone is a winner.

Millions of viewers get to watch one of the most highly anticipated re-matches between two men that genuinely loathe one another.

Silva will still be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and retain his UFC middleweight championship belt and Sonnen will “leave the UFC forever” to accept his Oscar award for best actor.
