The key moments of State of Origin 2012 Game 1:
First Half
It was an eventful opening half for this year’s Origin series. The Maroons took a 12-4 lead, and were like a steam train – slow to get going but very tough to stop once underway.
Kickoff by QLD – Paul Gallen took the first hit up for the NSW Blues, Maroons don’t monster him too much.
6m TRY Uate! NSW lead 4-0. The opening play has been dominated by NSW and on the last tackle, Robbie Farah puts up a high ball. The ball falls to a contest between Knights teammates Uate and Boyd, and it bounces off Boyd in the air before it rebounds off Uate’s back, who managed to pluck it from the air and dive over the line for a try!
Video referee Sean Hampsted took a long look at it but eventually awards the try and NSW open the scoring. Todd Carney tries the conversion but it’s a woeful kick, never troubling the posts. NSW 4-0 – Listen to Uate’s try here.
20m BIFFO! A penalty to Queensland after a soft penalty for a highshot saw the Maroons grab Greg Bird – three or four of them surround him. The Blues fly in to ‘separate’ the pair and suddenly its an all-in, punches being thrown. Replays show Michael Jennings scoring a big right on Brent Tate as a (very) late man in. The video ref advises the referees and Jennings is sent to the bin for 10 minutes! It’s 12 vs 13. Controversial call – players were throwing punches everywhere.
27m TRY BOYD! QLD are 4-4 on the back of a penalty. The ball is spread left, Slater throws the last tight no-look pass to Boyd who just has to get the ball down in the corner and it’s 4-4, kick to come. Thurston bends the ball around the post and Queensland lead after 28 minutes: QLD 6-4 NSW – Listen to Boyd’s try here.
39m TRY BOYD! That’s two! 10-4 to Queensland. The Maroons spread it down the left, with Johnnathan Thurston drawing defenders and Boyd gets the ball virtually untouched on the wing to put it down over the line. Thurston gets the chance to put QLD in front by 8 from virtually the same spot and he converts again. QLD 12-4 at halftime. – Listen to Boyd’s second try here.
Halftime – Queensland 12 New South Wales 4
42m TRY JENNINGS! Mistake from Billy Slater! Slater has looked in all sorts under the high ball all night and he juggles it under contest from Hayne – Jennings pounces as the ball comes out and scores! Redemption for Jennings? Carney adds the extras and suddenly QLD lead by just two. QLD 12-10 NSW. Listen to Jennings’ try here.
47m QLD make a bust down the right and plenty of support players are in motion for the Maroons but Thaiday is tackled strongly and he loses it. Let off for the Blues there – QLD were lining up.
51m Penalty to NSW. The Blues look to take the points! Surprising decision – Ricky Stuart did not look pleased, it’s 40m out and off-centre. Kick wasn’t on target – poor decision for NSW. QLD looked to be under big pressure and they get a let off.
59m TRY B. STEWART? NSW work the ball up the left, Cooper Cronk rushes up and Mitchell Pearce works the ball up through the line and works a ball out to Jennings who puts the foot down. Jennings puts through a grubber and it’s contested by Sam Thaiday who is there firs,t but Brett Stewart grabs the ball and thinks it’s a try – close one. Video replays shows that Thaiday has grounded the ball, so it’s a drop out. No try. Still QLD 12 – NSW 10.
THE KEY MOMENT OF THE GAME: 72m TRY Inglis? Amazing moment after a high bomb. The ball falls to Inglis who is virtually unmarked and he grabs the ball and puts it down. But Robbie Farah gets his foot in the way and Inglis drops it.
The video referee has a look, a long look. Farah’s foot gets in the way – does he deliberately and dangerously play at the ball? It’s a line ball decision and it’s called a TRY! Controversial!
Paul Gallen blows up and the referees can’t explain it. Thurston converts a simple kick and Queensland are eight in front with just minutes to go. QLD 18 NSW 10. That’s the game for Queensland!

The game was a total bungle by the refs and video ref. Just about every call against NSW was controversial, not one of those could be justified by the ref making the call. The Inglis “try” was a joke, I really don’t know what game the vid ref was watching but it ceryainly wasn’t this one. So the question remains…HOW MUCH DID THEY GET PAID!!!??? And the guy who wrote this story obviously doesn’t know too much himself…10 vs 11???

NRL Rule #103 If the defending player was deemed to have practiced intent of dislodging the ball in the attacking in goal then the attacking team may continue play. However if the ball is deemed dead the defending team must proceed to a goal line drop-out.
Also if you prevent a player from scoring by causing a penalty instead, that constitutes a penalty try. and leading with the foot is against the rules. So in regards to the inglis try and what the rules say it was a try.

Firstly, I am a Queenslander but I have to say that the Inglis try was the worst decision I have seen in Rugby League. The new refs were not up to the origin standard and made 7 mistakes in my mind – 6 of them against NSW.
Bad luck NSW – we robbed you again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more thing – I just heard that Sportsbet is refunding those who bet on NSW with a 5.5 start – a bookie feeling sorry for a punter………well that says it all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turn it up the inglis try was awarded due to the rule you cant defend the ball in a try scoring moment with your foot weather its dangerous or not learn the rules and the ref also missed hayne punching thurston in the face it was a close game could of gone either way accept blues lost agained and look forward to game two

Pritty sure us Queenslander’s are winners and have been for 6 long years. All NSW whinging about the game is due to the events when your team showed poor sportsmanship resulting in QLD getting a pelanty for it. Get over it and look forward to game 2

Your report on the fight doesn’t mention what set it all off. Watch ridiculous performance of Greg Bird ( not an origin quality player) that starts the whole thing.
Your report on Inglis try says he drops the ball.He did not. The ball was kicked loose by Farrah (that means play on.) Inglis then grounded it. Sloppy stuff from you guys, obviously written by a New South Welshman. Please, if you are gonna report it just report the facts

Maybe you should ‘report the facts’. People are saying it was a knock on after it hit Farah’s foot. Oh, and I’m a Qld’er so no sour grapes here. Just annoyed how state of origin is all about the money now says – first playing it in Melbourne and second they have been hyping up Inglis breaking this record all week and surprise surprise he gets awarded a try.

Funny thing about the sin binning of Jennings, if i had to fight someone in an origin team I’d pick him. speedy wus who’s soft. has never aimed up at origin level. shut his eyes when he threw the punch because it was embarassing.
notice from the under 16′s that NSW are breeding another bunch of lairs who went over the top in celebrating a win (shades of the ten pin bowling celebrations which galvanised Qld into a more competitive bunch.
keep it up, you always think you’re ‘born to rule’ and beating you makes it much sweeter.

PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP !! This is a farce the officials for that game clearley had one goal in mind for the outcome of that game .NSW was clearely the better team and had queensland totally rattled .Halfway through the first half and there was no sign of queensland making any points and then who steps up to change the equation, thats right queensland lethal and best player on the ground the clown with the whistle !! How can you only send of one player there were allott of other players from both teams in that brawl .Send no one off or send one from each team,no you cant do that that would make it fair and would not give queensland any advantage . A disallowed try prior to that and that crazy dopped balll try for queensland = job done and the officials and the NRL get the result that was allways gunna happen when they decided to play in down in Melbourne !!!
The Game Is
Finished!!! They are destroyimg it !!!!!!

jennings got sent off due to the fact he ran 40m to get involved he deserved to be sent off. If you remember back to 2009 the guy that punched on with price didnt get sent off kite did for running in when it had nothing to do with him. NSW has always played dirty and when they get caught out they have a sook about it. Again in 2009 when thurston tried to defend a try with his foot collecting woof man in the head you got awarded an eight point try same rule applies for the inglis try this year just no one got hurt this time. Its a crap rule but now both Queensland and NSW have gainned something from the rule the ref missed things for both sides they allways do accept it and look forward to game two. and as for tate he ran in to break it up he didnt throw a punch thats why he didnt get sent off. The fight started due to bad sportsmanship from bird so if you want to blame any one for your lose blaim him. Not the ref he did exactly what he should of done in regards to the rule book
