Melbourne Victory sign goalkeeper Nathan Coe

Melbourne Victory have put their goalkeepers on notice by signing Australian international Nathan Coe.
The 29-year-old was on Wednesday unveiled as their latest signing on a three-year deal, turning up the pressure on current keepers Lawrence Thomas and Tando Velaphi.
The Victory cracked their first win of the A-League season by beating Adelaide United 2-1 last weekend, but had conceded seven goals in the opening two rounds.
Coach Ange Postecoglou coached Coe at national level as a junior and lured him home to Australia once he’d decided to leave Danish club SonderjyskE.
“We are delighted to welcome Nathan to Melbourne Victory,” Postecoglou said.
“Nathan has been part of some massive clubs throughout his career to date and his experience in Europe, as well as with the Socceroos, will be invaluable – both on and off the pitch.”
Coe has been capped three times by the Socceroos and was a squad member at the 2011 Asian Cup.
There was speculation Victory were going to sign Socceroos defender Jade North however the defender opted to remain with Japanese side Consadole Sapporo.

Well thank goodness for that. Velaphi had a pretty good game last week, which was good to see. But even if he is back in form, I don’t think it’s a great idea to run a team where no one has any faith in the second keeper.

Exactly what MVFC needs.
I rate Nathan Coe very highly. Whenever I seen him playing for the National Team, he has displayed foot skills better than any of the GKs in contention for the National Team – i.e. better than Schwarzer, Jones, Langerak, Federici.
This is a player hand-picked by Ange for the system Ange wants to play.
Additionally, Harry Kewell was photographed at Heathrow this morning … bound for Australia.

Seems genuine – a Liverpool fan posted the photo on Twitter today: Twitter handle: @RedAnt_
Apparently, he saw H at the airport. I assumed Heathrow, but more likely a regional airport in the North. He said H was flying to London & then to Australia.
He asked H for a photo, but H was “stressing” was on the phone organising his flights, but once this was done he returned & took time to be part of the photo.

Was disappointed Harry left the A-League from a football perspective,although fully understand why given his family circumstances, he made a correct decision.
Took him a while to get going last season,but when he did I thought he was a cut above the rest. I remember his two goals at Suncorp & packing it for the rest of the game.
We can only dream that he may play again in Australia.

Totally agree, of the older players I always thought Kewell was the one I wanted to go to Brazil with the Socceroos. maybe he is looking for a guest stint????

Don’t know enough about Coe to offer a direct comment but obviously he’s not coming in on a three year deal to be back-up to Thomas or Velaphi. We can only assume then that Ange thinks/knows he can play with his feet and he’ll provide more confidence to the defense than the two keepers who had a chance but failed to impress in the first few weeks. I expect he’ll get a start at the first opportunity. Another piece in Ange’s MV jigsaw puzzle.

looks like the victory will win this season now for sure. that was the prediction after ange signed, even moreso after flores signed.
flores has been taking a bit of a tumble in the first 3 rounds so far.

So does a player retiring completely free up the cap space?
I would have though Melbourne’s cap was already maxed out.
What if he un retires in a month or two?
Edit: I’m not bitter…just interested in the rules/precedent.

If the player retires he is not drawing a wage so it definitely gives the club money to spend elsewhere. If he un-retired then his wage would go back on the payroll and he’d be part of the wages bill.
Melb still have one spot to fill so i guess they haven’t maxed out their cap yet. Don’t forget that Flores is the International marquee (replacing Kewell) and Thompson is the Aust marquee so neither of their wages are in the salary cap. This year they no longer have Hernandez who would have been the next highest paid player and they have not replaced him with anyone who would draw similar wages so they could still have some room to maneuver.
