With the Lions tour closing in fast and many selections tight, it must be emphasised this is not a Wallaby team, but a ranking process to select one.

David Pocock, James O’Connor, and Hugh McMeniman are injured and were not considered, Kurtley Beale was also left out as he’s stood down by the Rebels.

But all four would be in the 22 if on deck.

22 – James Slipper – as honest a prop as the day is long, he will play a big role in the Lions series.

21 – Sitaleki Timani – at last starting to use his huge frame to advantage.

20 – Berrick Barnes – still injury-prone, but an important cog in the Wallaby machinery.

19 – Jesse Mogg – on his day electric, needs more consistency, but still an exciting prospect.

18 – Ben Alexander – reliable, and tireless.

17 – Christian Lealiifano – just off the pace to be a Wallaby, but closing in fast.

16 – Scott Higginbotham – has come of age in the last month, taking on more responsibilities with the Rebels.

15 – Jake Schatz – unheralded and unsung outside of Queensland, and deserves more recognition.

14 – Kane Douglas – like his Waratah lock partner Timani, Douglas is starting to throw his weight around.

13 – Kyle Godwin – this exciting 20-year-old centre/fly-half with the Force has Wallaby written all over him.

12 – Benn Robinson – long tried and tested loosehead prop.

11 – James Horwill – the Wallabies best lock, hopefully he can stay off the physio’s table.

10 – Quade Cooper – just accept him warts and all, he’ll win more games than lose them.

09 – Stephen Moore – dependable hooker around the park, but must improve lineout feeds.

08 – Liam Gill – how good will this 20-year-old openside flanker be?

07 – Digby Ioane – one of the most exciting wingers in world rugby, who must be given more opportunities.

06 – Ben Mowen – has cemented his place in Australian rugby since he became Brumbies skipper last season.

05 – Michael Hooper – just thrives on hard work in defence and attack.

04 – Adam Ashley-Cooper – the 75-capped Wallaby outside-centre is enjoying the best season of his career.

03 – Israel Folau – he came, he saw, he conquered, quickly.

02 – George Smith – 32-years-young, and still right up there as one of the world’s elite openside flankers.

01 – Will Genia – indispensable, the world’s best half-back, and can rightfully be compared to Australia’s greatest nines of all time in Ken Catchpole, and Nick Farr-Jones.
