The Essendon Football Club will not take part in the 2013 AFL finals series and has been handed a fine of $2 million as punishment for bringing the game into disrepute with its involvement in the supplements controversy that has rocked the club all year.

On Wednesday night, following long negotiations, AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick was flanked by CEO Andrew Demetriou as he announced the agreed punishments handed to Essendon.

These include:

  • Relegation to ninth on the AFL ladder, meaning the club will miss the 2013 AFL finals.
  • The club has been fined $2 million.
  • A 12-month suspension for coach James Hird, effective from August 25, 2013.
  • A six-month suspension for football manager Danny Corcoran, two of which are withheld for a two-year period.
  • A $30,000 fine for assistant coach Mark Thompson.
  • Loss of draft picks in the 2013 and 2014 National Draft (Essendon will still be able to trade for draft picks at any level of the draft.)

Club doctor Bruce Reid has had his charges posptoned until Thursday.

The AFL Commission has been hearing a series of charges against Essendon, Hird, Thompson, Reid and Corcoran after being charged with bringing the game into disrepute.

Essendon will play their final game of the season against Richmond, with Simon Goodwin to coach the side for the dead-rubber match.

Essendon Chairman Paul Little indicated that Hird will coach the side in 2015, following his ban lifting on August 25, 2014. Little indicated that Hird will receive a contract extension, which has been agreed but not documented.
