Cricket Australia have been forced to apologise after tweeting an image of four men supposedly impersonating English spinner Monty Panesar this morning.
Australian cricket’s governing body posted a photo via their official Twitter account – originally from Instagram – with an accompanying caption “Will the real Monty Panesar please stand up?! #Ashes”.
The image was of four bearded Sikh men dressed as Teletubbies, matched with turbans and coloured sunglasses.

Well-known English CNN presenter Piers Morgan was among those to condemn the tweet.

Following criticism Cricket Australia swiftly took the offending tweet down during the morning session of the first day of the second Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval.
We apologise for any offence caused by our earlier tweet. That was certainly not the intention. It has been removed.

The gaffe came just days after ABC announcer David Nixon was stood down as a result of comments he made in England’s loss to the Chairman’s XI in Alice Springs.
Nixon was disciplined for pronouncing Panesar’s name in an Indian accent while introducing the spinner over the ground’s PA, and allegation he has since denied.
