Legendary AFL coach Kevin Sheedy used to use footage of inspirational Australian sportsmen and women like Lleyton Hewitt and Betty Cuthbert to motivate his players.

Australia’s Twenty20 squad were treated to one better on Wednesday, when they watched hobbled Ryan Harris bowl his side to a thrilling Test series win over South Africa.

It was a remarkable effort that every Australian present at Newlands will remember for the rest of their lives.

“We were huddled around the team room watching the end, it was getting quite nervous,” T20 opener Aaron Finch told AAP.

“The way that Ryan Harris was bowling on one leg and the way they won the game, they were amazing scenes.

“We went out for dinner that night and everyone was just talking about it.

“We are all cricket nuffies. We love the game and love to see Australia performing so well, it’s just great to see.”

T20 captain George Bailey, who arrived in Cape Town to see Harris in so much pain he could barely walk, noted the “legend of Ryan Harris grows bigger and bigger”.

“He just gives so much,” Bailey said.

Australia and South Africa now square off in a three-match T20 series that starts on Sunday in Port Elizabeth.

Bailey was doubtful as to how much genuine momentum his side could take from Australia’s stirring 2-1 Test series win over the hosts.

“South Africa have got many new players, as do we. It’s fresh energy, it’s a different thing,” he said.
