Port's midfield: On the road to glory?

Port Adelaide is quickly forming one of the most exciting midfields in the competition.

It is a remarkable turnaround considering only a couple of years ago the football club was on the ropes and according to some looked to have a bleak future.

The recruitment of South Australian junior Jared Polec from the Brisbane Lions during the pre-season could prove to be a masterstroke.

Polec was a star junior footballer and was taken at selection number five in the 2010 National Draft, but the midfielder failed to make an impact at the Lions with homesickness and injuries a key factor.

The move to the Power looks to have rejuvenated his football, looking at his pre-season and Round 1 form.

Polec’s emergence will create headaches for opposition coaches when planning which midfielder to tag.

Captain Travis Boak had a career-best year last season and can tear a game to shreds if he is allowed to roam free.

Ollie Wines is a prototype bullocking inside midfielder, who took the competition by storm in his first season.

If his game against Carlton last Sunday is any indication, he is showing no signs of the dreaded second-year blues.

Expect Chad Wingard to spend more time through the midfield this season after his All-Australian breakout year in 2013.

Hamish Hartlett adds silk and poise to the on-ball brigade while Brad Ebert, Robbie Gray and Angus Monfries can all pinch-hit through the midfield.

The engine room is the building block to creating a premiership side and Port may be closer than what many think.
