Formula One is set to have twelve teams line-up on the grid once again in 2015, with the FIA’s approval of a team entry from NASCAR team owner Gene Haas.

Haas had expressed his interest to Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, in January that he would like to contest in the sport, potentially as early as 2015. With his entry now approved, the American based squad could be in the championship next year.

“Obviously, we’re extremely pleased to have been granted a Formula One license by the FIA,” said Haas. “It’s an exciting time for me, Haas Automation and anyone who wanted to see an American team return to Formula One.”

“Now, the really hard work begins. It’s a challenge we embrace as we work to put cars on the grid. I want to thank the FIA for this opportunity and the diligence everyone put forth to see our license application come to fruition.”

The American is also at the helm of the Stewart-Haas Racing team in NASCAR, which won the Sprint Cup Series in 2011 with driver and part team owner Tony Stewart. The team also runs the cars of Kurt Busch, Danica Patrick and Kevin Harvick.

Haas will be set to join Formula One in it’s second year with the new power-train regulations. Regulations which have caused quite a stir among experts and fans alike. The rumours are that Haas’ team will be using a Dallara chassis and may have a Ferrari power-train.

At the moment in the 2014 championship, the factory Ferrari team appear to be more than a second and half off the pace of the leading, factory Mercedes team, which has won the first three races of the season.

With 2015 still a while away, there is a good chance for the Haas entry to get their development on track for a solid debut, however this being an entirely new project, it could prove difficult at the same time.

Does anyone out there think Gene Haas will be more successful in Formula One than the likes of Caterham, Marussia and the now defunct Hispania team? Or will that scrap for tenth in the constructors’ championship become a three-way affair again.
