Week two of the 2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period begins today, and the eighteen AFL clubs have less than four days to finalise all trades with plenty of action to come after just three trades were made in the first week.

LATEST

Mon, Oct 13, 10:00 AM

The second week of trade period begins today and is expected to be one of the busiest in recent times.

Only three trades were successfully completed in the first week of the trade period, and there are as many as twenty players still looking to join new clubs before trade period officially ends at 2pm this coming Thursday.

Free Agency is officially over for the year with five confirmed movements, however there is the chance for delisted players to move as Free Agents later in the year.

Dayne Beams remains one of the most interesting names in this year’s trade period as the premiership midfielder continues to seek a trade to Brisbane, despite the Lions and the Magpies failing so far to strike a deal for him.

It is understood that Brisbane may be willing to increase their offer to be picks 5 and 25, along with young midfielder Jack Crisp, which could be enough to break the deadlock despite the Magpies reportedly calling off negotiations at 5pm on Friday.

Also in the balance is the future of Paddy Ryder for whom negotiations have stalled after the AFL blocked a plan that would see Essendon void his contract and let him become a Free Agent. With the Free Agency period now over, this certainly will not come to pass.

What is not certain is just how Ryder will make his way to Port Adelaide – if at all. He has ruled out staying at Essendon entirely, with his manager stating last week that Ryder may retire from AFL altogether if not granted a trade.

Making waves also is Ryan Griffen whose stunning request for a trade to Greater Western Sydney set off a series of events leading to the resignation of Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney on Friday. Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has said he hopes Griffen remains at the club to fulfil his contract, but a trade looks much more likely.

The confirmed movements so far are as such:

Jarrad Waite, Shaun Higgins signed to North Melbourne.

James Frawley signed to Hawthorn.

Nick Malceski signed to Gold Coast.

James Gwilt signed to Essendon.

Jonothan O’Rourke and pick 43 traded from Greater Western Sydney to Hawthorn for picks 19 and 40.

Jeff Garlett and pick 83 traded from Carlton to Melbourne for picks 61 and 79.

Joel Patfull traded from Brisbane to Greater Western Sydney for pick 21.

Some late night news – Essendon veteran Dustin Fletcher has re-signed with the Bombers for what will be his 23rd season, and is almost certain to play game no. 400 now.

One of my favourite players, I’m glad to see him continue on.

Sat, Oct 11, 5:00 PM

It has been confirmed by Essendon that they will be signing unrestricted Free Agent James Gwilt, with the deal to be processed on Sunday.

Sat, Oct 11, 4:00 PM

The AFL Website is reporting that Essendon are set to sign unrestricted Free Agent James Gwilt to their list. Gwilt, who played 126 games with St Kilda in a ten-year career there, was told earlier in the off-season that the Saints would not offer him a new contract for 2015.

Fri, Oct 10, 5:50 PM

Jay Clark of the Herald Sun is reporting that Richmond is targetting former Melbourne captain Jack Trengove.

Trengove was drafted to the Demons with pick 2 in the 2009 draft and impressed in his first two years at the club, and became the club’s youngest ever captain in 2012 when he held the position jointly with Jack Grimes.

However, Trengove’s development has stalled in recent years and he spent most of the 2014 season on the sidelines recovering from a navicular bone fracture.

It is speculated that the Demons could trade pick 23 and Trengove to receive Richmond’s pick 12.

Fri, Oct 10, 5:20 PM

Collingwood’s self-proclaimed deadline to strike a deal with Brisbane regarding Dayne Beams has passed. The Magpies have released a statement.

“Negotiations between the Collingwood Football Club and the Brisbane Lions over Dayne Beams ceased at 5pm on Friday evening…

Now that negotiations with Brisbane have ceased, Collingwood is free to pursue other opportunities involving players and picks. The club remains open to offers from other clubs for Dayne, if that is his wish.

If not, at the conclusion of the trade period the club will look to sit down with Dayne to prepare for the 2015 season.”

You can read the full statement on Collingwood’s website.

My Take: I said before the Trade period began that I believed Gold Coast might swoop, and I still believe it. The Suns holds picks 8 & 15 in the draft.

Fri, Oct 10, 4:52 PM

Tom Lonergan has rejected a big money offer to join the Western Bulldogs and committed to playing out the rest of his contract at Geelong.

Fri, Oct 10, 4:45 PM

Western Bulldogs President Peter Gordon has reiterated his stance that he expects Ryan Griffen, who yesterday requested a trade to Greater Western Sydney, to honour his contract and remain with the Bulldogs in 2015.

However, Gordon has inched back from his strong statement yesterday that the Bulldogs would not indulge Griffen’s request, instead stating he hopes Griffen will “honour his obligations that he undertook when he executed that contract.”

“Who knows what may happen in the course of events? I’m not going to predict that, I’m simply going to say as a position of principle, he’s a required player”.

This would appear to leave the door slightly open for a potential trade if, as expected, Griffen refuses to budge on his demand to be traded.

Gordon has also stated that, if Griffen does stay on at the Bulldogs in 2015, it will not be as captain of the club, with the Dogs to name a new captain ahead of next year.

Fri, Oct 10, 4:05 PM

Paddy Ryder‘s manager Paul Connors has ruled out any chance of his client agreeing to stay on at Essendon and says Ryder may retire from the AFL altogether if the Bombers are not able to finalise a trade with Port Adelaide.

Fri, Oct 10, 4:00 PM

We’re just one hour from the supposed “deadline” set by Collingwood for the Brisbane Lions to present a suitable trade offer for Dayne Beams.

Collingwood have stated that if the Lions do not present a suitable offer by 5pm today, they will back away from the trade table and hold Beams to his contract in 2015.

The Lions are reportedly holding firm on their offer of draft picks 5 & 25, refusing to put any of their top-line players on the trade table.

Fri, Oct 10, 3:37 PM

Geelong and Brisbane have reportedly agreed in principle to a trade that will see Allen Christensen join Brisbane in exchange for pick 21, which the Lions received earlier today in exchange for Joel Patfull.

However, the trade is unlikely to be finalised until Monday, with Christensen set to undergo a medical exam at Brisbane before the trade is set in stone.

Fri, Oct 10, 3:16 PM

The AFL Website is reporting that despite the resignation of Brendan McCartney, Western Bulldogs Captain Ryan Griffen is still determined to leave the club and seek a trade to Greater Western Sydney.

Fri, Oct 10, 2:44 PM

Damian Barrett is reporting that Essendon have talked Jason Winderlich into re-signing with the club, after Winderlich first retired mid-year, then requested a trade to Richmond earlier in the week. Yet to be confirmed.

Fri, Oct 10, 2:34 PM

Time to lock in Allen Christensen as a Lion. Geelong’s list manager Neil Balme has confirmed that if Brisbane offer pick 21, which the Lions have just received from Greater Western Sydney in exchange for Joel Patfull, Geelong is willing accept it in exchange for Christensen.

Christensen requested a trade earlier in the week citing a desire for a fresh start, and named Brisbane as his preferred destination yesterday.

Balme also stated that a three-way deal seeing Mitch Clark to Geelong, Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne, and Travis Varcoe to Collingwood is likely to be completed soon.

Fri, Oct 10, 2:27 PM

Overshadowed by the news regarding Brendan McCartney’s resignation, Adam Cooney has reportedly undergone a medical exam at North Melbourne and may seek a trade to the club.

Fri, Oct 10, 2:00 PM

Our first trade of the day is complete as two-time Best and Fairest winner Joel Patfull makes his way from Brisbane to Greater Western Sydney for a second round pick, no 21.

The Lions are said to have split amicably with experienced defender Patfull and will be pleased to have received a high-placed draft selection in return for him which is likely to help them net either Dayne Beams or Allen Christensen.

Greater Western Sydney will be pleased to have gained another mature player to boost their defensive unit which was at times overwhelmed this year.

My Take: A win-win situation.

Fri, Oct 10, 11:48 AM

Officially confirmed via the Western Bulldogs press conference, Senior Coach Brendan McCartney has resigned.

Bulldogs chairman Peter Gordon announced McCartney’s departure from the coaching position, blaming a deterioration in communication between mentor and players.

Gordon said McCartney had been crucial in building the club in the past three years, but a communication breakdown in the second half of 2014 led to issues within the playing group.

After a review, Gordon said McCartney decided to step down.

Fri, Oct 10, 11:08 AM

Confirmed by a number of sources that Brendan McCartney and the Western Bulldogs have parted ways. Official announcement at press conference still to come.

Fri, Oct 10, 10:32 AM

The Western Bulldogs have announced a press conference for 11:30 AM to be held by President Peter Gordon and CEO Simon Garlick. It is speculated they will announce the sacking of coach Brendan McCartney.

Fri, Oct 10, 10:15 AM

Strong rumour going around that Western Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney will resign his position today following Captain Ryan Griffen‘s bombshell request for a trade yesterday afternoon.

My Take: Yep, pretty sure this is happening.

Fri, Oct 10, 9:57 AM

Day 5 of the Trade Period is about to get underway. Things are expected to come to a head on the Dayne Beams to Brisbane trade today as Collingwood earlier in the week gave the Lions a deadline to come up with a suitable trade by 5pm today.

Whether a trade will be found or not remains to be seen, but there were rumours last night going around that Brisbane were prepared to give up pick 5 and James Aish.

Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch hopped onto Twitter to swiftly put an end to the rumour earlier this morning.

Thu, Oct 9, 10:05 PM

Some late news that is good news for Essendon fans, Ben Howlett has re-signed with the club for two years putting an end to speculation that he might seek a trade.

Thu, Oct 9, 9:00 PM

A big day of trade news all things considered. Here’s what happened.

We had our first trade of 2014 when Hawthorn announced early in the morning that they had officially secured Greater Western Sydney’s Jonothan O’Rourke, who was taken at pick 2 in the 2012 draft. Hawthorn gave up their first and second round picks, 19 & 40, for O’Rourke and the Giants’ third round pick, 43.

Our second trade came through later in the afternoon when Melbourne claimed out-of-favour small forward Jeff Garlett for the low low price of a fourth round pick. The Demons traded picks 61 and 79 to Carlton and received Garlett and pick 83.

Those were the only player movements of the day but the biggest news was yet to come, as Bulldogs captain Ryan Griffen dropped a bombshell by requesting a trade to Greater Western Sydney, citing a desire for a ‘fresh start’.

It has since been revealed that Griffen had a disagreement with Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney after the season was finished. The disagreement was thought to be resolved but when Griffen returned from leave he informed the club that he had changed his mind and was seeking a trade to the Giants.

Western Bulldogs President Peter Gordon has since stated that the Bulldogs “are extremely disappointed… and have no intention of indulging it [his request for a trade].”

The other major piece of news from the day is that the AFL has officially warned Sydney that it will put an immediate end to the Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) if the club signs a free agent or trades in a player at any point in the next two years.

COLA is being phased out over the next two years, but unless the Swans want to see it end immediately, they will have to wait until 2016 before targeting more players from outside the club.

A few other tidbits of news that were lost in the big stories of the day:

Hawthorn’s Sam Grimley has requested a trade after leading the VFL for goalkicking in 2014, citing a desire for greater opportunity.

Carlton are reportedly close to a deal to secure Greater Western Sydney’s Kristian Jaksch. The rumoured deal is that Carlton will give up pick 7 in the draft to secure Jaksch, and will also receive the Giants’ pick 19, along with big-bodied midfielder Mark Whiley.

It is reported that Greater Western Sydney is set to trade pick 21 to secure two-time Best and Fairest winner Joel Patfull from the Brisbane Lions.

The AFL officially moved to block the proposed ‘creative’ trade between Essendon and Port Adelaide that would see Paddy Ryder move to the Power as a Free Agent, giving Essendon a compensation pick, and then also see an under-the-table deal by which Port Adelaide would gift the Bombers pick 17.

The AFL made a firm statement that the Free Agency move would not be allowed if the two teams also pursued a trade to supplement the move. They AFL has not ruled out allowing Essendon to void Ryder’s contract and allow him to cross to Port Adelaide as a Free Agent without any linked trade.

North Melbourne’s Levi Greenwood, who earlier in the week requested a trade to Collingwood, is rumoured to be re-considering his decision, and may yet re-sign with the Kangaroos.

Carlton ruled out trading for the Western Bulldogs’ Adam Cooney.

Thu, Oct 9, 5:15 PM

Emma Quayle has just revealed via The Age website that the Sydney Swans have been told they cannot trade in a player, or sign a restricted or unrestricted Free Agent, otherwise they AFL will bring an immediate halt to all Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) payments.

As it stands, COLA is set to be phased out over the next two years, but it is understood the AFL have contacted the Swans and told them that it will be terminated immediately if the Swans trade in a player or sign a restricted or unrestricted Free Agent in the next two years.

This means the only method Sydney would have of gaining experienced players until 2016 would be taking recycled players through the draft or signing delisted Free Agents.

The Swans have already lost Nick Malceski as a Free Agent this year and have also seen young forward Tim Membrey request a trade to St Kilda.

No restrictions of any sort have been placed on Greater Western Sydney.

My Take: There’s been a lot of talk about COLA in recent times after the Kurt Tippett and Lance Franklin signings of recent years, and the AFL during the year decided to ‘phase out’ COLA. They seem to be taking it one step further now to try and prevent the perception that the Swans are using COLA to steal players from elsewhere. Is it a fair move though? I wouldn’t say so. The AFL made the rules and now they’re punishing Sydney for using them to their advantage.

Thu, Oct 9, 4:56 PM

Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has released a statement clarifying the reasons Ryan Griffen has asked for a trade, via the Western Bulldogs website.

Ryan Griffen raised with me some concerns about our Senior Coach the day after our best and fairest… We arranged for Ryan to meet with Brendan… and they discussed his concerns.  Brendan acknowledged some faults and agreed to work on them. At the conclusion of the meeting, Chris asked Ryan if he was happy with the meeting and agreeable to working with Macca on an ongoing basis.

“Ryan answered yes to both questions… Having returned to Australia on Tuesday night and without any further discussion with us after giving that agreement, Ryan informed us that he had changed his mind. We were also informed that he was seeking a trade to GWS…

“We are extremely disappointed at his approach and have no intention of indulging it.”

You can read the full statement on the Bulldogs website.

Thu, Oct 9, 3:06 PM

Suddenly the trade period is going off! Melbourne have officially landed out-of-favour small forward Jeff Garlett, trading picks 61 & 79 to Carlton for Garlett and pick 83.

Garlett has kicked 39 or more goals in a season three times in his career, but some off-field issues in 2014 led to Carlton making the decision to trade him.

My Take: Paul Roos is a coach known for getting the best out of recycled players, and this could be the perfect opportunity for him to do so. If Melbourne can get Garlett back into form, it’ll be a big win for them. They got him for nothing and are badly in need of goalscorers given they averaged just 60 points per game this year.

Thu, Oct 9, 2:18 PM Further to the previous news, the Bulldogs have announced via Twitter that because Ryan Griffen is contracted, they do not intend to trade him and will instead be holding him to his contract.

My Take: I’d be shocked to see the Bulldogs stick to this. Taking the guy who is supposed to be the captain of your club, and forcing him to stay against his will? That’s awful management.

Thu, Oct 9, 2:05 PM

Massive news – Western Bulldogs captain Ryan Griffen has unexpectedly requested a trade to Greater Western Sydney.

After 202 games with the Bulldogs and one season as the captain, the former #3 draft pick has stated he wants a fresh start outside of Victoria.

This is a massive blow to the Bulldogs, who are also likely to lose Liam Jones and Jason Tutt in this trade period, and have already lost Shaun Higgins to North Melbourne via Free Agency.

However, it could be just what the Bulldogs need as they look to land a big key forward in the draft, with GWS expected to put pick 4 on the table in order to get Griffen.

The Giants will add another experienced, mature body with leadership ability to their midfield, which will be a huge gain for them.

My Take: Safe to say this is the biggest shock of the Trade period so far.

A few other tidbits from earlier today.

Hawthorn’s Sam Grimley, who led the VFL in goal kicking this year, has requested a trade, and the Hawks are reportedly also open minded to trading Ryan Schoenmakers if the versatile key position player wants to move elsewhere.

There is also an unconfirmed rumour going around that Levi Greenwood may change his mind about pursuing a trade to Collingwood and instead re-sign with North Melbourne.

Thu, Oct 9, 10:35 AM

And we have our first trade! Hawthorn trades picks 19 and 40 to Greater Western Sydney for Jonothan O’Rourke and pick 43.

O’Rourke is a highly-rated youngster who was taken at pick no. 2 in the 2012 draft. He has struggled to get games at Greater Western Sydney however and last week announced a determination to return home to Victoria, later nominating Hawthorn as his preferred destination.

The trade gives Greater Western Sydney an extra first round pick to play with and a slight upgrade on their third round pick.

Thu, Oct 9, 10:00 AM

Day four of the Trades period kicks off. Let’s hope we finally see a trade today!

Wed, Oct 8, 9:20 PM

Brisbane’s attempts to secure Dayne Beams have reportedly hit a snag with the Lions refusing to put any of their talented youngsters on the table and the Magpies refusing to accept a trade for picks alone.

The Magpies earlier this week gave Brisbane a deadline saying that if the Lions failed to propose a suitable trade before 5pm this coming Friday, they would take Beams off the table and hold him to his existing contract, which expires at the end of 2015.

Brisbane are believed to have upped their offer to include their first two picks, currently picks 5 and 25, but the Magpies are still not satisfied.

The Magpies have also reportedly ruled out involving North Melbourne in the trade as part of their attempt to get Levi Greenwood, stating that they would prefer to keep the negotiations separate.

Wed, Oct 8, 8:20 PM

It’s been reported that Essendon are considering voluntarily voiding Patrick Ryder‘s contract so that he can move to Port Adelaide as a Free Agent, meaning they would receive a compensation pick, which would almost certainly be immediately after their current first pick, giving them picks 20 and 21.

A similar situation occurred last year when St Kilda’s Nick Dal Santo was released from a trigger-year clause in his contract so that he could join North Melbourne as a Free Agent rather than needing to pursue a trade.

It is speculated that Essendon could then via an under-the-table agreement also receive pick 17 from Port Adelaide, which has been offered to them by the Power in exchange for Ryder already, in a separate trade involving other players or picks.

My take: If something like the above scenario goes through, there will be a lot of eyebrows raised. In fact, I’ll go further than that – there will be open rioting and it will be the end of Free Agency compensation picks.

Wed, Oct 8, 5:00 PM

Looks like today is not the day we get our first trade.

Wed, Oct 8, 3:45 PM

The Western Bulldogs have reportedly expressed an interest in Geelong defender Tom Lonergan, seeing him as a short-term solution to their undermanned backline.

Wed, Oct 8, 3:05 PM

Not really Trade or Free Agency news but it’s a slow day so far. The AFL has announced the squad to take part in the International Rules game later this year.

Wed, Oct 8, 1:28 PM

Geelong have confirmed via their website that Allen Christensen has requested to be traded, for non-football reasons. Christensen’s manager confirmed this on the AFL’s Trade Radio instead, and said regarding Christensen’s reason for moving, “It is a decision taken purely for personal reasons. He simply feels that at 23 he wants a fresh start to his football elsewhere.”

Wed, Oct 8, 11:47 AM

Still waiting for our first official trade, three days into the trade period.

Wed, Oct 8, 11:25 AM

Some surprising news this morning is that Geelong small-forward/midfielder Allen Christensen is reportedly planning to request a trade to Queensland, either to the Brisbane Lions or the Gold Coast Suns.

There has been no official statement from either Christensen or Geelong so it is not known what the reason for the move might be, though it is not believed to be football related. There has been some speculation that Christensen is looking to get out of the Geelong footballing ‘bubble’ and move to state where footballers live more anonymously.

The Suns are in the box seat to secure the young inside midfielder, who has played 65 games for Geelong including the 2011 premiership. The Suns have picks 8, 15 and 29 in the current top 30, and while Brisbane hold a number of high picks as well, they are expected to use some or all of them to secure Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams.

Either way it’s a big win for the Queenslanders who have lost a number of players to traditional football states over the last few years, but are now seeing some come the other way.

Tue, Oct 7, 11:30 PM

There’s a late-breaking rumour being reported by Emma Quayle via The Age website that Western Bulldogs have been discussing a potential trade for 2008 Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney, with Carlton being the likely destination.

The rumour is that the Dogs are considering trading Cooney and Liam Jones, who has already requested a trade, to Carlton for their second round pick, currently pick 28.

However Carlton are reportedly also considering using pick 28 to secure Kristian Jaksch from Greater Western Sydney.

My Take: Cooney is a quality player but given he will be a Free Agent next year the Dogs might be considering trading him now to get better value. They likely don’t see him as a part of their long-term plans and could benefit from some added youth. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if the Bulldogs do seriously consider trading him, but for pick 28? Surely they would want more than that.

Tue, Oct 7, 6:45 PM

Looks like that will be the last of the big news for the day. There were no player movements today, but we did have a number of breaking stories.

Levi GreenwoodJeff Garlett and Jonothan O’Rourke all formally nominated clubs they want to be traded to – Collingwood, Melbourne and Hawthorn respectively.

Sydney was awarded a second-round compensation pick, currently pick 39, as result of Free Agent Nick Malceski crossing to the Gold Coast last night.

Adelaide unveiled former Geelong, West Coast and Port Adelaide assistant Phil Walsh as their new Senior Coach.

Some interesting questions are raised by today’s happenings. Is pick 39 for Malceski fair? Should players be able to nominate clubs when requesting a trade? Drop your thoughts in the comments.

Tue, Oct 7, 6:10 PM

The AFL has announced that Sydney will receive a second round pick, to be place immediately after their current second round pick, as compensation for the loss of Nick Malceski via Free Agency. In the current draft order, that pick will be no. 39.

Tue, Oct 7, 4:40 PM

Jonothan O’Rourke has reportedly confirmed that Hawthorn is his preferred destination for a trade home to Victoria.

Tue, Oct 7, 4:23 PM

St Kilda’s list manager Ameet Bains has stated on the AFL’s Trade Radio that former no. 2 pick Jonothan O’Rourke will not be seeking a trade to the Saints.

It is expected that O’Rourke will nominate Hawthorn as his preferred destination.

Tue, Oct 7, 3:55 PM

Damian Barrett makes the claim on the AFL’s Trade Radio that Collingwood are going after Greater Western Sydney’s Adam Treloar. The Giants shut that down pretty quick.

Tue, Oct 7, 2:15 PM

Liam Pickering is on the AFL’s Trade Radio and has confirmed that Levi Greenwood has requested a trade to Collingwood and that Jeff Garlett has requested a trade to Melbourne.

Tue, Oct 7, 1:05 PM

Adelaide have officially announced Phil Walsh as their new Senior Coach, and put forward their entry for Pun of the Century.

Walsh has held assistant roles at Geelong, West Coast and most recently Port Adelaide, and is regarded as one of the best tactical coaches in the game.

Tue, Oct 7, 12:53 PM

Carlton’s Jeff Garlett has reportedly requested a trade to Melbourne.

The talented small forward kicked 43 goals in 2013 but fell out of favour this year at Carlton, and was involved in a late-night brawl earlier this year the drew the ire of coach Mick Malthouse.

Carlton stated earlier this year that they would be looking to trade Garlett and it looks like has found his new home.

Tue, Oct 7, 12:29 PM

AFL website now running the story that Levi Greenwood has requested a trade to Collingwood. No confirmation from North Melbourne as of yet, but it’s looking pretty solid at this point.

Tue, Oct 7, 12:07 PM

Glenn McFarlane at the Herald Sun also saying that Levi Greenwood has requested a trade to Collingwood. Looking more and more likely now but yet to be confirmed by any official source.

Tue, Oct 7, 11:52 AM

The rumour of Travis Varcoe heading to West Coast seems to be picking up steam.

West Coast were reportedly quite interested in Nick Malceski earlier in the trade period but eventually decided against pursuing the Free Agent. Perhaps Varcoe they see as a more affordable or more durable option for their half-back line.

However, it is not yet clear just what the Eagles would consider trading for Varcoe, or if Varcoe has any particular desire to change clubs, so there’s every chance this one could come to nothing. The Cats shopped Varcoe around in last year’s trade period with no takers, and at the time Varcoe strongly stated that he wanted to remain at Geelong.

Varcoe remains contracted at Geelong for the 2015 season.

Tue, Oct 7, 11:45 AM

The Western Bulldogs’ biggest move of the trade period so far.

Tue, Oct 7, 10:20 AM

David Koch has broken the news this morning that Port Adelaide’s midfield coach, Phil Walsh, is expected to be announced as Adelaide’s new senior coach later today.

A new morning of trade period begins and we’re still awaiting our first official change. Mark Robinson has tweeted that he does ‘suspect’ Levi Greenwood will ask for a trade to Collingwood today. Whether that’s idle speculation or inside knowledge isn’t clear.

In terms of the negotiations between Essendon and Port Adelaide over Paddy Ryder, the Bombers reportedly have said they will not do a trade unless they can get their hands on one of Ollie WinesChad Wingard, or Hamish Hartlett. Such a trade will not be forthcoming from the Power, so it will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

Mon, Oct 6, 10:18 PM

A late night announcement is that the Gold Coast Suns have signed Sydney Free Agent and All-Australian Defender Nick Malceski, who played in the Swans’ 2012 Premiership.

Malceski is arguably the league’s best rebounding defender and is bound to bring significant experience to the Suns backline. This will make the losing 2014 AFL Grand Final his last game for the Swans.

Malceski has signed a three-year deal with the Suns and was reportedly being offered only a two-year deal by Sydney. He will also take up a position as a development coach with the Suns’ academy which may prove a stepping stone towards a post-football coaching career.

An announcement on compensation for Sydney will likely be made tomorrow.

Mon, Oct 6, 9:00 PM

So the day has closed with only a single player movement, as James Frawley joins Hawthorn, and Melbourne receives pick 3 in return. Fair to say that has upset more than a few with social media exploding over both the notion that the reigning premiers were able to net a big Free Agent, and that Melbourne received what many would say is more compensation than Frawley warrants.

There has also been some late breaking news however, with Emma Quayle reporting that Jason Winderlich, who announced his retirement earlier in the year, has decided to play on – but not at Essendon. Winderlich reportedly wishes to move to Richmond.

Despite reported interest from Gold Coast, Mitch Hallahan is keen to remain at Hawthorn, where he is currently contracted. The Hawks have said categorically that Ryan Schoenmakers will not be traded.

Mon, Oct 6 5:25 PM

Confirmed, Melbourne have been awarded a round 1 compensation pick as a result of James Frawley signing with Hawthorn earlier today. Assuming the Demons do not sign a Free Agent of their own, this means they will have picks 2 & 3 in the draft.

Mon, Oct 6, 4:19 PM

Result of the Essendon board meeting is that they have decided to, for the time being, retain their current coaching structure. Effectively, James Hird has not be sacked, for now. This might spell the end of Mark Thompson at Essendon though.

Mon, Oct 6, 3:11PM

Rumour that Levi Greenwood has requested a trade appears to be false. Derek Hine, Collingwood’s recruitment manager, has said via Trade Radio that the Pies are interested in Greenwood’s services, but Greenwood himself has not made a decision as of yet.

Greater Western Sydney swingman Kristian Jaksch has reportedly indicated a preference to join Carlton, but has left the door open for St Kilda.

Mon, Oct 6, 2:00 PM

Tim Membrey is confirmed to have requested a trade to St Kilda.

Also unconfirmed rumours going around that Levi Greenwood has requested a trade Collingwood.

Mon, Oct 6, 10:55 AM

West Coast and Fremantle are both interested in Western Australian Ben Howlett, who is considering leaving Essendon to return to his homestate. It is believed Howlett will wait until the coaching situation at Essendon is resolved before making a decision.

A board meeting set to occur today may determine James Hird’s fate as senior coach of Essendon.

West Coast are also reported to have some interest in recruiting Geelong’s Travis Varcoe.

Tim Membrey has reportedly requested a trade to St Kilda, following the decision of Adam Goodes to play on at Sydney.

Mon, Oct 6, 10:37 AM

Is it egotistical of me to quote my own Tweets? Yeah, probably a little.

Mon, Oct 6, 10:28 AM

Trade Period is officially open!

Mon, Oct 6, 10:25 AM

The results of the Father-Son and Academy bidding session are as follows.

Melbourne bid on Isaac Heeney with pick 2. Sydney match the bid and will select Heeney with their first pick, currently pick 17.

The Western Bulldogs bid on Darcy Moore with pick 5. Colingwood match the bid and will select Moore with their first pick, currently pick 8.

North Melbourne bid on Jack Steele with pick 15. Greater Western Sydney match the bid and will select Steele with their second round pick, currently pick 23.

Adelaide bid on Billy Stretch with pick 29. Melbourne match the bid and will select Stretch with their third round pick, currently pick 39.

Richmond bid on Liam Dawson with pick 31. Brisbane match the bid and will select Dawson with their third round pick, currently pick 41.

Fremantle bid on Jack Hiscox with pick 32. Sydney match the bid and will select Hiscox with their second round pick, currently pick 36.

North Melbourne bid on Harris Andrews with pick 34. Brisbane match the bid and will select Andrews with their fourth round pick, currently pick 60.

Fremantle bid on Zaine Cordy with pick 51. The Western Bulldogs match the bid and will select Cordy with their fourth round pick, currently pick 61.

Geelong bid on Abe Davis with pick 70. The Sydney Swans match the bid and will select Davis with their fourth round pick, currently pick 73.

No club elected to bid on Josh ClaytonAlec Waterman or Jeremy Finlayson, and those players go to their respective clubs at their last picks, as follows – Clayton to Brisbane (currently pick 114), Waterman to West Coast (currently pick 120), Finlayson to GWS (currently pick 113).

James Frawley is officially a Hawthorn player as the Hawks have lodged documents to sign the key defender earlier this morning. The former All-Australian will a big boost to the Hawks backline and likely a replacement for Brian Lake at full back in the years to come.

It is unknown exactly what compensation Melbourne will get for losing Frawley, but it is widely expected they will receive a pick immediately after their first round pick, which would give them picks 2 and 3 in the draft. The AFL will make an official announcement later today.

The Father-Son and Academy bidding is about to kick off, with 12 youngsters set to find homes today. I’ll be covering the results of that here as that will lock away some draft picks.

After the bidding is over, the Trade period is officially open!

Sat, Oct 4, 8:00 PM

Sounds like you can lock James Frawley in as a Hawk. The Hawthorn media team today appear to have accidentally uploaded a video entitled “James Frawley Happy to be a Hawk”, showing the Free Agent – who is still currently listed with the Melbourne Demons – in a Hawthorn polo. The video has since been taken down.

No major news today.

Adelaide have officially stated that Patrick Dangerfield will not be traded in 2014. There was some suggestion that, concerned he might leave the club as a Free Agent in 2015, the Crows might attempt to trade him this year in order to get better compensation, but that seems not to be the case.

Collingwood have given Brisbane an ultimatum regarding Dayne Beams, telling the Lions that they must make an acceptable offer before 5pm Friday Oct 10, or the Magpies will take the homesick midfielder off the trade table for this year. The Lions have offered up their first pick in the draft, pick 4, but the Magpies want more.

It’s believed Geelong have reached an agreement to give up their second round pick, currently pick 33, for Mitch Clark from Melbourne, who will then trade the same pick to Collingwood for Heritier Lumumba.

Looks like that will be all for the first day of Free Agency.

All in all we had two players move clubs on the first day with Jarrad Waite and Shaun Higgins both crossing to North Melbourne as was widely expected.

Carlton will not receive any compensation for Waite, but the Bulldogs will receive a second round pick for Higgins, assuming they do not sign a Free Agent themselves this year.

We have our second official movement as the Western Bulldogs formally decline to match North Melbourne’s bid for Shaun Higgins. Higgins is now a Kangaroo!

The AFL has announced that Carlton will not receive any compensation for Jarrad Waite’s departure. However, the Western Bulldogs will receive a second round pick (immediately following their existing second round pick) for Shaun Higgins’ departure, assuming they themselves do not sign a Free Agent in 2014.

Not strictly Trade/Free Agency news here, but the nominations for Father-Son and Academy picks have come in.

There are five Father-Son nominations this year. The most prominent is Darcy Moore, son of two-time Brownlow medallist Peter Moore, who is expected to join Collingwood at their first pick of the draft, currently pick 8.

Billy Stretch, son of Steven (Melbourne), Zaine Cordy, son of Brian and brother of Ayce (Western Bulldogs), Alec Waterman, son of Chris (West Coast) and Josh Clayton, son of Scott (Brisbane Lions) have all also been nominated.

Seven players have been nominated under the Club Academies Rule. Isaac Heeney, Abe Davis and Jack Hiscox are all nominated to join Sydney, Harris Andrews and Liam Dawson are nominated to join Brisbane, and Jack Steele and Jeremy Finlayson are nominated to join Greater Western Sydney. Heeney in particular is seen as a future star.

Essendon are not eligible to take any Father-Son selections in the main draft this year under the penalties they accepted in 2013. However, they have nominated Father-Son prospect Jack Long, son of Michael, as a Rookie Father-Son, and will be able to take him there if he is overlooked in the main draft.

Father-Son and Academy bidding will occur at 10am on Monday Oct 6.

A few minor updates from the day…

Though not strictly Trade/Free Agency news, two Irish recruits have been signed by AFL clubs as Category B Rookies. Conor McKenna has signed with Essendon and Patrick Brody with West Coast. McKenna in particular was being chased by a number of clubs and is a good get for the Bombers.

The Western Bulldogs a reported to be attempting to move up in the draft order, aiming to upgrade their first selection at the draft – currently pick 5 overall – to Melbourne’s first pick, which is pick 2. The Bulldogs are aiming to get access to one of Patrick McCartin or Peter Wright, both highly rated tall forward options in this year’s draft.

Melbourne apparently raised Luke Dahlhaus as a player they were interested in but the Bulldogs have stated that in no way will he be traded.

Melbourne have also ruled out trading South Australian youngster Jimmy Toumpas, who they took at pick 4 in the 2012 draft.

West Coast have apparently pulled out of the running to sign Sydney Free Agent Nick Malceski, but the 2014 All-Australian defender is in talks with the Gold Coast. Gold Coast have also stated an interest in Hawthorn’s Mitch Hallahan.

Sam Blease of Melbourne and George Burbury of Geelong are both seeking opportunities at new clubs.

As expected Jarrad Waite has signed with North Melbourne and is the first player to move clubs in the 2014 Trade/Free Agency period. Waite has joined North Melbourne on a 2-year deal.

North Melbourne has also lodged paperwork to sign Shaun Higgins from the Western Bulldogs. As Higgins is a restricted Free Agent, the Bulldogs must decide whether or not to match the offer for Higgins before it is processed. They are expected to decline this opportunity.

Free Agency is officially open!

It is believed that James Frawley has settled on Hawthorn as his destination.

Sydney’s Tim Membrey has requested a trade home to Victoria, with Cartlon, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs all rumoured to be interested in the medium-sized forward, who has played one game for the Swans in two years.

Jason Tutt of the Western Bulldogs has requested a trade seeking great opportunity, and is reportedly heading to Carlton.

CONFIRMED MOVEMENTS

Jarrad Waite, formerly of Carlton, has joined North Melbourne as a Free Agent. Carlton received no compensation.

Shaun Higgins, formerly of the Western Bulldogs, has joined North Melbourne as a Free Agent. The Bulldogs received a second round pick as compensation.

James Frawley, formerly of Melbourne, has joined Hawthorn as a Free Agent. Melbourne received a first round pick as compensation.

Nick Malceski, formerly of Sydney, has joined Gold Coast as a Free Agent. Possible compensation has not yet been announced.

THE EARLY RUMORS
One of the biggest names raised in the trade period to date is Dayne Beams.

The goal-kicking midfielder, who has played 110 games for Collingwood including the 2010 Premiership, has requested a trade home to Queensland for family reasons.

Dayne’s brother Claye plays for the Brisbane Lions, and Brisbane is his mostly likely destination.

The Lions have put their first selection at the National Draft, currently the fourth pick overall, on the table, but Collingwood believes Beams is worth more.

The Lions have ruled out trading away any of their young stars to secure Beams.

Beams is contracted for another year meaning Collingwood can refuse to trade him if they wish to, and this is likely to be a complicated negotiation.

My take: There’s more than one club in Queensland. The Gold Coast Suns have picks 7 and 14 in the upcoming draft which may trump Brisbane’s offer.

There has been speculation all year about the future of James Frawley of Melbourne. The full-back has played 139 games for the Demons and won All-Australian selection in 2010.

Hawthorn, Geelong and Fremantle have been the three clubs most heavily linked to Frawley, and as an unrestricted Free Agent, he can move unhindered to the club of his choice. It is not yet clear which club that will be, but he seems certain to depart Melbourne.

Melbourne are likely to gain a first round compensation pick following Frawley’s expected departure, meaning they will most likely hold picks 2 and 3 in the coming draft.

My take: Would be a good fit at any of the three clubs. Not worth pick 3 in the draft by a mile, though.

Essendon’s ruck-forward Patrick Ryder has quit the club and has nominated Port Adelaide as his preferred destination. Ryder has played 170 games and kicked 117 goals for the Bombers, and enjoyed a career-best season in 2014.

Although Ryder is contracted for another two years at Essendon he is adamant that he will leave.

He could potentially leave the club as a delisted free agent through a contract clause that is potentially violated by breaches of player welfare related to the club’s ongoing supplements scandal if the Bombers do not broker a trade.

Port Adelaide are believed to have offered their first pick at the draft, the sixteenth pick overall, for Ryder, but Essendon have reportedly knocked back this offer.

My take: Essendon tried to play hardball with the Western Bulldogs over Stewart Crameri last year and eventually backed down. Expect the same to happen here. Might get a fringe player thrown in with pick 16.

After retiring mid-year citing depression, Melbourne’s Mitch Clark is back on the scene and looking to join a new, successful club, believing a change of scenery will be the best thing for him.

The ruck-forward was originally drafted by Brisbane and played 82 games for the Lions before requesting a trade home to Western Australia at the end of 2011, nominating the Fremantle Dockers as his preferred destination.

However, Fremantle were unable to satisfy Brisbane with a trade offer, and Clark eventually accepted a big-money offer from Melbourne.

He played 15 games kicking 36 goals for the Demons but recurrent injury issues ruined his time there and damaged his mental health to the point where he gave the game away mid-2014.

Clark has now decided to return to the AFL at a new club, and has nominated Geelong has his preferred destination.

My take: He has a lot of risk attached to him, given his issues with both body and mind in the last two years. However, he has huge upside and will be a great acquisition for Geelong if he works out.

31-year-old key forward Jarrad Waite has decided to part ways with Carlton after 184 games and 252 goals in thirteen years at the club.

Waite informed Carlton earlier in the week that he would be leaving via Free Agency. He has not stated where he will go but it is expected that he will join North Melbourne.

Fremantle have also shown interest in Waite however and may yet pip the Roos at the post for his services.

My take: Carlton fans, who have spent more than a decade being frustrated by Waite’s inconsistency, are quietly celebrating.

Free Agent Shaun Higgins has quit the Western Bulldogs after 122 games in nine years at the club, informing them on Tuesday that he would be departing via Free Agency.

Carlton were reported to be interested in Higgins, but have pulled out of the race. According to Higgins the race for his services is down to North Melbourne and another unnamed club.

My take: A serviceable player when fit, almost certain to be signed to become a Kangaroo.

Premiership defender and All-Australian Nick Malceski of Sydney is reportedly considering his options as a Free Agent.

The 30-year-old, who has played 176 games for the Swans and is arguably the league’s best rebounding defender, has attracted interest from West Coast, Melbourne and Gold Coast.

He may yet decide to stay at Sydney.

My take: I suspect he’s more likely than not to re-sign with the Swans.

Collingwood’s premiership defender Heritier Lumumba has requested a trade to Melbourne after discussions between himself and coach Nathan Buckley resulted in the mutual decision that it was best for Lumumba and the club to part ways.

My take: Not a huge loss for the Magpies, but his experience will benefit Melbourne. Collingwood should get a decent draft pick as compensation.

Jonothan O’Rourke, Kristian Jaksch and Sam Frost have all requested trades from Greater Western Sydney back to Victoria, citing limited opportunity at senior level and homesickness.

Jaksch has reportedly narrowed his decision down to Carlton or St Kilda, but neither O’Rouke nor Frost have nominated a preferred destination to date.

My take: Not big losses for GWS as they were generally depth players. Will be cheap young talent for Melbourne clubs.

Gold Coast ruckman Daniel Gorringe has requested a trade to Port Adelaide, after managing just 20 games in four seasons for the Suns.

My take: This was bound to happen sooner or later. Gorringe is a long way down the order at Gold Coast and Port are badly in need of ruck depth.

Adelaide have also shown some interest and might swoop if Port and the Suns struggle to make a deal.

Western Bulldogs forward Liam Jones has requested a trade to Carlton citing limited opportunity at the Bulldogs. The Tasmanian has kicked 68 goals in 64 games at AFL level but didn’t play since Round 15 this year.

My take: Should go through pretty easily as Jones is uncontracted. Unlikely to fare any better as a Blue than he did as a Bulldog.

Daniel Merrett and Joel Patfull of the Brisbane Lions are both considering offers from other clubs. Patfull is interested in a move to a Sydney-based club, while it is unclear where Merrett might go. Both are contracted and may well choose to stay.

My take: Wouldn’t be surprised to see nothing come of this.

Carlton is trying to rid itself of Mitch Robinson and Jeff Garlett, who were both involved in a late night brawl some time ago and have generally rubbed coach Mick Malthouse the wrong way.

Some interest has been shown in both from opposition clubs, but none have stated outright a desire to recruit either.

My take: Talent will only get you so far these days. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is the end of the road for both of them.
