With only two days left of the transfer window, Arsenal’s sole buy has been goalkeeper Petr Cech for £10million from Premier League rival’s Chelsea.

With many world-class players being linked to the club (Karim Benzema, Sami Khedira, Edinson Cavani) and the club having the spending power to bring the players in, why haven’t the club spent big?

There are three possible reasons why Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger decided not to spend big: no players that are available are better than those in the current squad, the players’ attitudes not being correct and/or Wenger himself being too stubborn to buy big.

Firstly, the players above are obviously better than Arsenal’s current options (Oliver Giroud, Theo Walcott, Francis Coquelin), but that doesn’t mean the North London club could persuade the players to move. In fact Benzema has ruled out the move and Khedira moved to Juventus earlier in the transfer window. Money is no object for the club as a member of the club’s board has stated they have £200 million to spend.

A few eyebrows may have been raised when one of the reasons was players not having the correct attitude, but Wenger is known to prefer players with the correct mindset. He turned down the chance to sign a then 18 year-old Didier Drogba because of his poor attitude. But why does it matter? Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn’t exactly known for his fantastic attitude but he could walk into just about any team in the world.

I believe it is something Wenger needs to get over and quickly if his Arsenal team are going to reach their full potential this year.

Finally, and I believe this is the most likely, Wenger’s stubbornness is what has stopped the club spending so big this summer. Until recently, Wenger has never spent massively on one player, with Mesut Ozil being the only player you could class as big money for today’s standards.

This is something that has to change. Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t change. Wenger wants to prove that he doesn’t have to spend big to win trophies but I don’t think that’s possible anymore, especially when you see Manchester City’s business in the window.

City are currently streets ahead of Arsenal and if Wenger doesn’t do anything about it in the next two days it will turn out to be another disappointing season for the club.
