The major events of the AFL off-season will be the opening (October 9) and closing (October 18) of free agency, the opening (October 12) and closing (October 22) of the trade period, and the AFL draft (November 24).

Other important events include the AFL pre-season and rookie drafts (November 27), as well as several delisted free agency periods in which clubs will be able to freely sign those players delisted by other clubs.

This year for the first time AFL clubs will have access to future picks at the trade table, meaning they will be able to trade draft picks from both 2015 and 2016 if they chose to do so.

A new father-son and academy bidding system will also make the draft a more lively affair with the likely introduction of live bidding on these prospects during the draft.

The draft will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, the first time since 1997 that the draft has been held in Adelaide.
